Friends,

Earlier this week, we honored a group of doctors, healthcare professionals, and government leaders who have provided steady leadership, sound advice, and countless hours of service to our community during the pandemic.

In every generation and in every community, there are people who stand up and make a difference every day, but especially during times of great need. It is my honor to recognize the individuals listed below as our 2022 Luminary Award Winners. They have helped to lead and serve our city during a time when it has been needed most and have set the example for those that will follow them. Their legacy will live on long into the future.

On behalf of all the citizens of Memphis, thank you for your service, and may God bless you and our city in the new year. Go here to watch the full ceremony.

Opportunity knocks: This past Tuesday, I had the opportunity to join in the announcement of a new partnership between Cummins and the Tennessee College of Applied Technology. It was a partnership on a Diesel-Powered Equipment Technology Program that will train individuals for employment as diesel service technicians and mechanics.

The program lasts 20 months. When students complete their training, the starting wage is $18/hour and grows to $40-45/hour within just a few years. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about the program, please go here.

Another opportunity—Tech901 is a nonprofit founded in 2015 by community development and business leaders to train interested parties in the IT sector. They offer seven courses to prepare their graduates to enter into one of three career channels including hardware technicians, IT professionals, and software developers. As the IT industry continues to grow and evolve, this is a great asset for our community and a strong tool for those interested in starting down a great career path.

A great match: There was an article written recently about Ja Morant, Memphis and the ties that bind them. There was a line in there that I think summed up why the Grizzlies and Morant are such a great match for each other. The line said, Which finally brings us to the very best aspect of Morant and the Grizzlies’ rise. Memphis is one of America’s great cities, a bastion of culture and history and Morant-levels of civic charisma.” I couldn’t agree more.

Once in a generation, an athlete comes along that is truly a joy to watch and a master of their sport. Ja Morant is that kind of athlete. He’s electrifying to watch, great for the sport, and even better for the Grizzlies and Memphis. If you want to read the full article, you can do so here.

Have a great weekend!

Yours,
