Friends,

I’ve long said that Memphis is an opportunity city. Right now, we have thousands of available jobs at private employers across our community, as well as, many available positions within City of Memphis government.

In Memphis today, you can:

  • Get a free community college education through Tennessee Promise. We’re the first state in the nation to do that. And, it goes for adults who want to go back to school, too. Learn more at tnpromise.gov.
  • Get a free education at Tennessee College of Applied Technology. Learn more at tcatmemphis.edu.
  • Get a free high school education for adults who did not obtain their degree as a teen. Learn more at goodwillmemphis.org.
  • Apply to one of more than 10,000 open jobs at any one time in the Memphis area via jobs4tn.gov.
  • Receive free training and application assistance through Workforce Mid-South. Learn more at workforcemidsouth.com.
  • Start a rewarding career with the Memphis Police Department at joinmpd.com. And through the Blue Path program, you can start that career as a Police Service Technician while you study for free at Southwest right out of high school.
  • For additional job training programs, nonviolent criminal record expungement, assistance in receiving a high school equivalency diploma, and many other services that you can take advantage of in our city for FREE, visit opportunity.memphistn.gov.

Beyond our duties to improve core city services, I find more and more that our job at city government is to connect citizens—particularly our young people—to these opportunities.

We’re an opportunity city, and we’re here to make sure you know how to reach them.

Spirit Airlines will begin nonstop Las Vegas and Orlando flights next April, and daily flights to Los Angeles will start in June. Also starting in June—American Airlines will be adding a nonstop flight to Boston.

A helping hand: Thank you to the members of Tennessee Task Force 1 (consisting of 45 responders including Firefighters, Paramedics, Doctors and Engineers and four Canine Teams) that deployed last Sunday in the aftermath of severe storms and tornadoes in Mayfield, Kentucky.

Thank you for your willingness to always lend a helping hand when it’s needed.

Joy of the season: This past Saturday morning was our annual Soulful Memphis Operation Christmas Basket, where we provided 5,000 families in need with food for their holiday celebration.

It was a great event and would not have possible without our sponsors and volunteers.

Additionally, on Wednesday, we had the opportunity to spread the Christmas spirit with local families as we passed out toys with Coach Penny Hardaway and the Memphis Tigers men’s basketball team.

We wish them luck as they play against the UT Volunteers this weekend in Nashville.
