Good afternoon,

For the fourth time, we’ve passed our City’s budget. Each year, we put a lot of hard work and preparation into this process, and I want to thank all departments for helping us get over the finish line once again. It’s also important to recognize the efforts of our City Council led by Chairman Kemp Conrad and Budget Chair Martavius Jones.

We were very fortunate this year to allocate $12 million to our employees in the form of pay raises and another $5.5 million to absorb the change in rising healthcare costs. Public safety employees received a 4% increase in pay. All other employees received a 1% increase in pay, and our retirees received a 1% increase to their COLA. The absorption of the health care costs is equivalent to an additional 1.25% increase for all employees. Also, for the first time since 2006, we have fully funded our pension— helping to add security for employee retirement. Of course, I would have liked to have done more on these fronts, but as you know, we have a limited amount of resources to go around.

As always, I am incredibly proud of the work our city employees do day-in and day-out and feel truly fortunate to work with each and every one of you. Thank you for all that you do for the citizens of Memphis every day.

Yours,
