Good morning,
The Council had a full day yesterday. To see what happened, click here. Also, if you know of any young people interested in learning more about City Council and the legislative process, our 2018 student internship program application is up on our website until April 13th.
MLK50 Resolution – In honor of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in an effort to address the poverty gap, the Council’s MLK50 project decided to use $100,000 to assist citizens with cost associated with Diversion and those needing to have their driver’s license restored. An additional $250,000 was approved to expand this initiative.
Raising the City's minimum wage - Councilman Ford presented a resolution during Budget committee that would raise the minimum base wage for City of Memphis employees to $15.50 per hour. 93.6% of all current full-time employees are already making at least $15 an hour in salary, but there are still approximately 420 employees that currently earn less than this benchmark. The annual cost for this initiative will be $1.45 Million annually. This item passed in committee and will be before the full council in two weeks.
Grocery Feasibility Study – The results of the feasibility study for a grocer in the areas affected by the two Kroger closings on Third Street and Lamar Avenue were presented. The process will now begin to find a prototype that can include other retailers to operate alongside the grocer.
Cooper Young Historic District - Cooper Young is close to becoming Memphis’s newest historic district. The decision will be final upon approval of the minutes with an ordinance to follow to address the concerns of the Council.
MLGW Customer Assistance Programs – MLGW provided essential information on the 4 program areas in place to assist MLGW customers. Visit the MLGW website to learn more about energy efficiency and weatherization program, payment management, moratoriums on disconnections, and economic support through external partnerships.
Congratulations to the East High School Mustangs – The Council welcomed and congratulated the members and staff of the East High School Boys Basketball Team on their win over Whitehaven High School to become the 2018 Class AAA State Champions. We are very proud of this team.
Have a great week, and thanks for reading.
Take care.
