Good evening,

Having passed a budget for FY 2017 with several weeks to spare before the deadline of June 30, 2016, the Council had a fairly quiet day at City Hall for what is usually a busy last meeting in June.

Residency Requirements: Over the next month, Council will consider an ordinance to require all employees of the city of Memphis to live within the city limits. The details of such a requirement are yet to be worked out in committee meetings over the next two sessions, so be certain to come out or call in to participate in that conversation.

In brief: The City has nearly 50 boards and commissions that supplement the work of City employees in keeping this city going, and fully staffing is critical work. Council in committee approved 12 appointments and re-appointments on the path to goal. Also through committee today were resolutions approving up to $110,000,000 in general capital improvement bonds for MLGW, which at the same time today got approval to pay off its last round of bond issuances two years early for a savings of around $300,000. The Sexual Assault Kit task force gave its monthly update, continuing to show progress on this important initiative. And the city accepted over $2.4 million in grants, including $1.6 million in funding for an all-hazards response barge to protect our city’s riverfront.

Finally, the Council passed the first reading of an ordinance to change the meeting dates in August, so if you plan on being down here, make sure to note that meetings this August will take place on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays (the 9th and the 23rd, respectively). I hope you’ll use this opportunity as Council will to join your neighbors on National Night Out.

Sincerely,

Kemp
