Mayor Coleman Names Samuel Clark Saint Paul City Attorney

SAINT PAUL – Mayor Chris Coleman today announced his appointment of Samuel Clark as Saint Paul City Attorney. Clark, currently State Director for U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar, brings extensive knowledge, management experience and government-focused legal experience to the job and will assume his duties on April 13, 2015.

“In addition to knowing the law, the City Attorney must act as a chief advisor and manage an office of talented public lawyers and staff working for the City,” said Mayor Coleman. “Samuel Clark has proven experience doing all three. His ability to lead teams and serve as a trusted counselor, combined with his knowledge of the legal issues facing our region will serve the City of Saint Paul extremely well in the coming years.”

Clark received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University and obtained his law degree from Yale Law School. He has spent his career entrenched in local government and public affairs. He clerked for Chief Judge Michael J. Davis in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota and served as an attorney at Greene Espel P.L.L.P., where he successfully defended municipalities in civil litigation in both state and federal courts.

Clark has also worked with Senator Klobuchar as Counsel on the Senate Judiciary Committee and then as State Director of her Minnesota office, where he currently serves as one of Senator Klobuchar’s chief advisors.

“Samuel is a smart and dedicated public servant with exceptional leadership skills,” said Klobuchar. “Serving first as my Counsel on the Judiciary Committee and then as State Director, Samuel’s intelligence and strong legal background made him an invaluable resource and asset to my office. Most of all, it is his passion for serving others and ability to motivate and inspire those around him that truly sets him apart.”

“Mayor Coleman has transformed the City of Saint Paul over the past 10 years,” said Clark. “His ability to tackle tough issues, his focus on equity and public policy, and his efforts to innovate and make decisions in the best interest of residents is admirable, and I look forward to being part of his team and to leading the superb team of lawyers and staff who work in the City Attorney’s Office.”

Clark currently lives in Saint Paul and succeeds Sara Grewing, who Governor Mark Dayton appointed to the bench in Minnesota’s Second Judicial District on December 23, 2014.
