Statement from Mayor Coleman and Councilmember Tolbert in response to Ford’s decision to preserve façade of former plant

“The Ford site is in the center of one of the state’s premier neighborhoods and represents an unprecedented redevelopment opportunity for the city and our residents,” said Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman. “It is my hope the development will be a vibrant, sustainable, and connected urban neighborhood that is an international model of sustainable design, providing jobs, housing, commerce and open space that ultimately fits in well with the neighborhood.”

“I’m very pleased with Ford’s decision to save the façade of the former Twin Cities plant to be incorporated into the future redevelopment of the site,” said Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman. “I know they evaluated a number of options, and were thoughtful in reaching their final decision. I believe they chose a solution that will help preserve Ford’s legacy of nearly 90 years of operations. I look forward to working with Ford and the developer to create a fitting memorial on the site.”

“I am satisfied with Ford’s plan to preserve the historic façade to be used in a future memorialization on the site,” said City Councilmember Chris Tolbert. “This recognizes the special place these buildings hold in our community, while balancing the need to prepare the site for redevelopment.”

Saint Paul’s Planning and Economic Development Department has overseen numerous studies to prepare for Ford’s future marketing of the site, and its ultimate redevelopment. These studies and additional information including monthly project updates can be found online at www.stpaul.gov/ford.
