Vulcan  Community Charities, the charitable giving arm of the Saint Paul Winter Carnival Vulcan Krewe, is making a generous donation to the Minnesota Fire Service Foundation for a new Fallen Firefighter Memorial to be built on the beautiful Capitol lawn.  Vulcanus Rex LXXIV will make a proclamation and present a check for $2000 to Saint Paul Fire Chief Tim Butler, accepting on behalf of the Foundation, in a ceremony at Saint Paul Fire Station No. 1, 1000 W. 7th St., on Friday, December 16 at 4:30p.  The 2011 Vulcan Krewe and their 1932 Luverne fire truck will be poised nose-to-nose with Saint Paul’s rig and fire crew for the presentation.

The Minnesota Fire Service Foundation’s goal is to raise $600,000 by December 31, 2011. The Vulcan’s generous contribution will take them to the brink of achieving that goal!  The Foundation plans to build a suitable and solemn memorial at the State Capitol to the194 Minnesota firefighters who have made the ultimate sacrifices for their communities.  Presently, a memorial statue is located in the baggage claim area of the international airport, a location that is no longer suitable or appropriate, and it cannot accommodate memorial services.

The new memorial will relocate the existing statue of a firefighter rescuing a child down a ladder, and include a plaque with the name of each fire department in Minnesota and an individual “column” for each lost firefighter.  For more information about the new memorial, including a depiction, please go to:  http://mnfireservicefoundation.org/Learn-More.html.

The Saint Paul Winter Carnival will run from January 26 – February 5, 2012.  The Minnesota Fire Service Foundation and the Saint Paul Fire Department gratefully thank the Vulcan Community Charities for their generous and worthwhile contribution, and for taking us to the brink of our laudable goal!
