Mayor Coleman announces Mortenson and MNUFC meeting workforce and inclusion goals for stadium construction

allianz rendering

Mayor Chris Coleman recently announced that Mortensen Construction is exceeding goals for workforce inclusion and contracting with small, women, and minority-owned businesses on the construction of Allianz Field, the new Major League Soccer stadium in the Midway neighborhood.

These goals were set forth as part of the development and use agreement negotiated between the City and Minnesota United FC (MNUFC) in 2016.

An August report from Mortensen shows that the number of hours spent working on the site by people of color and women are surpassing goals of 32% and 6%, through August at 36% and 10%, respectively.

This agreement between Mortensen and the City also set a goal of 25% of subcontracts on the site being local businesses. As of August 2017, small business subcontracts represent 27% of the total available.

The private investment that Allianz has facilitated in partnership with the City and MNUFC has also created over 17,500 hours of construction jobs, to date, and will support new permanent jobs once the stadium is complete.

The 346,000-square-foot facility will offer seating for nearly 20,000 fans, including 25 suites, 38 semi-private loge boxes, and four club rooms. Designed by Populous, the stadium will incorporate the latest amenities and technology while being sustainably designed to minimize environmental impact and energy usage.

Vibrancy makes its way to the Central Station block

Pop-ups at central station

This summer and fall, a wide range of businesses and civic and community organizations teamed up with the Musicant Group to create a more inviting and vibrant space for transit riders, employees, residents, and visitors in the block surrounding the Green Line’s Central Station.

This once vacant 1,300-square-foot space was transformed through temporary improvements like café-style seating, lawn chairs, beanbag toss games, spaces for food trucks, and local musicians. This gave Saint Paul’s downtown community a chance to engage with each other while on their lunch break or way home from work.

These efforts caught the eye of the Pioneer Press and the Star Tribune, as well as the attention of everyone walking around this area of downtown this summer and fall.

To see all of the events that happened through Pop-Ups at Central Station, please visit the program’s official Facebook page.

Airbnb's future in Saint Paul

Because short-term rentals are not currently permitted under the current Saint Paul zoning code, the City of Saint Paul has studied the short-term rental climate in Saint Paul and is proposing a regulatory framework to City Council this fall, to ensure this use is permitted in the future. We recognize that this "sharing economy" model is a great opportunity for tourism and economic growth in the city, and we want to make sure it’s regulated in a way that ensures safety for residents and visitors to Saint Paul.

A public hearing will be held at City Council later today, on the zoning code and licensing measures.
