News: WEEKLY SAINT PAUL FIRE & EMS BLOTTER

This feature we call “Fire & EMS Blotter” is a weekly update of the activities of the Saint Paul Fire Department.  During the week of May 24th through May 30th, the Saint Paul Fire Department responded to 878 calls for service. Here is a sampling of some of the emergency and non-emergency activities from information provided by the fire department.

LABOR – On May 25th at 5:50 am, Saint Paul Firefighter/Paramedics and EMTs responded to a home in the North End neighborhood for a pregnant 34 year old in labor.  She was assessed and transported to an area hospital.

YOUTH-SET FIRE – Saint Paul Firefighters were called to a report of fire alarms sounding and a garbage can on fire at a school on the 400 block of Edmund Avenue on May 25th at 10:53 am.  Firefighters arrived to find the fire extinguished by school staff.  A student admitted to using a lighter to set paper towels on fire and then placing them in the garbage can.  The student has been referred to Saint Paul Fire Department’s Youth Fire Play Intervention Program.  Keep matches and lighters away from children! If you know a youth who has set a fire, please refer them to Saint Paul Fire Department’s Youth Fire Play Intervention Program at 651-228-6203.

Unattended cooking fire

COOKING FIRE – On May 28th at 6:22 pm, Saint Paul Firefighters responded to a report of a kitchen fire on the 500 block of Blair Avenue.  Firefighters arrived to find and extinguish a stovetop fire with extension to the cabinets above. The occupant stated he had been heating a pot of oil on the stovetop, left the kitchen, and returned to find the fire.  Damages are estimated at $5,5000.  Stay and look when you cook!  Unattended cooking is the leading cause of residential fires.

LABOR – Saint Paul Firefighter/Paramedics and EMTs responded to a home in the Payne-Phalen neighborhood for a pregnant 23 year old in labor.  She was treated and transported to an area hospital.

MATTRESS/GARAGE FIRE – On May 30th at 11:41 am, Saint Paul Firefighters reported to a report of a fire in an alley on the 400 block of Blair Avenue.  Firefighters arrived to find a mattress on fire with fire extending to a garage.  The homeowner stated someone dumped the mattress by his garage a few days before the fire.  The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.

STOVETOP FIRE – Saint Paul Firefighters were called to a report of a fire in an apartment building on the 90 block of Lexington Parkway North on May 30th at 3:14 pm.  Firefighters arrived to find a small stove fire that had extended briefly to the cabinets above before being extinguished by two StoveTop FireStops.  The occupant stated she left dirty pots on the stovetop and may have forgotten to turn the burner off before leaving her apartment. When she returned, she found the smoke alarm sounding and her apartment filled with smoke.  Damages are estimated at $1000.  Stovetop fire extinguishers are an easy way to help contain a stovetop fire!  You can purchase them at Frattelone’s Ace Hardware or get them for free (as well as smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms) if you are a Saint Paul Homeowner and participate in Project Safe Haven.  To sign up for Project Safe Haven, call 651-228-6273.
