This
feature we call “Fire & EMS Blotter” is a weekly update of the activities
of the Saint Paul Fire Department. During the week of April 26th through
May 2nd, the Saint Paul Fire Department responded to 866 calls
for service. Here is a sampling of
some of the emergency and non-emergency activities from information provided by
the fire department.

ARSON – On April 27th at 1:56 pm, a
Saint Paul Fire Investigator was called to a report of a fire that was out in a
home on the 900 block of Frank Street. The investigator determined someone had
attempted to start a fire in the vacant home.
Saint Paul Fire and Police Departments are investigating.

INTOXICATION – Saint Paul Firefighter/Paramedics and
EMTs responded to a restaurant on the 900 block of Lexington Parkway North on
April 29th at 2:23 am for a 43 year old intoxicated male who hit his
head while others attempted to help him into the back of a vehicle. He was assessed and transported to an area
hospital.
GUNSHOT WOUND – On April 29 at 2:47, Saint Paul
Firefighter/Paramedics and EMTs responded to a home in the Union Park
neighborhood for a 36 year old male with a gunshot wound to the chest. The male was pronounced dead on the scene.
GUNSHOT WOUND – Saint Paul Firefighter/Paramedics and
EMTs responded to the area of East Orange Avenue and Payne Avenue on April 29th
at 3:45 am for a 22 year old female found standing on the street corner with
gunshot wounds. She was treated and
transported to an area hospital.
FIRE EXPLORER AXE GAMES
– On April 29th
the Saint Paul Fire Department hosted the second annual “aXe Games” where
nearly 100 Fire Explorers from Virginia, MN to Mason City, IA gathered for some
friendly competition and learning. Thank
you to Training Captain Jerry Deno, Bshift Squad 3 Captain Sampson and his
crew, and Saint Paul Fire Explorer Advisors: Chief Gerone Hamilton, Clarence
Hawkins, Will Smith, AJ Neis, Bernard Foster, Paul Lowery and Ms. BoNiita Mahe. Fire Exploring is a program for 14-21 year
olds who wish to learn more about the fire service and participate in training
similar to firefighter training. For

GARAGE FIRE - On April 29th at 5:57 pm
Saint Paul Firefighters responded to a report of a detached garage fire on the
1200 block of Hartford Avenue. The
homeowner reported burning yard waste earlier in the day and then placing the
ashes in a paper bag which was left in the garage when the homeowner left,
approximately 25 minutes before neighbors reported the fire. Damages are estimated at $43,000. Place ashes in a metal can/bucket with a lid
and keep away from your home and garage.
Ashes can stay hot enough to cause burns and/or start a fire for many
hours, or even days!

FALL – Saint Paul Firefighter/Paramedics and
EMTs responded to a home in the West Side neighborhood on April 29th
at 6:44 pm for an 11 year old male who began to vomit and had a seizure after
hitting his head when he fell skateboarding without a helmet. He was treated and transported to an area
hospital. PLEASE, always wear a helmet when
biking, skateboarding, skating, etc. to help protect your head!

VEHICLE FIRE – On April 29th at 9:41 pm,
Saint Paul Firefighters responded to a report of a vehicle fire on the 200
block of Lafond Avenue. Firefighters
arrived to find and extinguish a fire in the passenger compartment of a
minivan. The cause of the fire is
currently under investigation.

BRUSH & PORTA-POTTY
FIRE – Saint Paul
Firefighters were dispatched to a report of a brush fire on the 1400 block of
Phalen Boulevard on April 29th at 11:19 pm. Firefighters arrived to find an area of
leaves and a porta-potty on fire approximately 75 yards away. It is believed these fires were caused by an
arsonist.

COOKING FIRE – On April 30th at 2:58 pm,
Saint Paul Firefighters responded to a report of a fire in an apartment
building on the 1300 block of Ames Avenue.
Firefighters arrived to find and extinguish a stovetop fire. The occupant stated he had been heating oil
on the stovetop when it caught on fire, damaging the stove and microwave and
cabinets above the stove. Damages are
estimated at $5,100. Stay
and look when you cook! Cooking is the leading cause of residential fires and almost
always preventable!
