News: WEEKLY SAINT PAUL FIRE & EMS BLOTTER

 This feature we call “Fire & EMS Blotter” is a weekly update of the activities of the Saint Paul Fire Department.  During the week of June 15th through June 21st, the Saint Paul Fire Department responded to 939 calls for service. Here is a sampling of some of the emergency and non-emergency activities from information provided by the fire department. 

 

LABOR – On June 18th at 6:05 am, Saint Paul Firefighter/Paramedics and EMTs responded to a home in the Frogtown neighborhood for a 32 year old pregnant female in labor.  She was evaluated and transported to an area hospital.

 

ASSAULT – Saint Paul Firefighter/Paramedics and EMTs responded to a home in the South Como neighborhood on June 15th at 10:49 am for a 31 year old pregnant female who reported being assaulted.  She was evaluated and transported to an area hospital for further evaluation. 

 

TRAUMA – On June 15th at 4:21 pm, Saint Paul Firefighter/Paramedics and EMTs responded to the home of a 27 year old female in the Payne-Phalen neighborhood who fell after feeling weak and opened sutures from a medical procedure earlier in the day.  She was treated and transported to an area hospital. 

 

BICYCLE CRASH – Saint Paul Firefighter/Paramedics and EMTs responded to a home in the Dayton’s Bluff neighborhood on June 15th at 5:48 pm for a 10 year old male who fell of his bicycle and hit his head against a parked car.  He was treated and transported to an area hospital.  Always wear a helmet when riding a bike!

 

Phalen water rescue

WATER RESCUE – On June 15th at 7:13 pm, Saint Paul Firefighters rescued a male from Lake Phalen who became exhausted while swimming.  Once on shore, he was evaluated by Firefighter/Paramedics and EMTs and refused any further treatment or transportation to a hospital.  





Dumpster fire

DUMPSTER FIRE – Saint Paul Firefighters responded to the 600 block of Cromwell Avenue on June 16th at 10:20 pm for a report of smoke in the area.  Firefighters found a dumpster fire behind a business.  The fire is believed to have been caused by disposal of smoldering materials from the business being improperly disposed of in the dumpster.  Damages are estimated at $200.




Vehicle fire

VEHICLE FIRE – On June 17th at 1:35 am, Saint Paul Firefighters were called to a report of a vehicle fire on Westbound Interstate 94 at Lexington Avenue.  Firefighters were unable to locate the owners or occupants of the vehicle at the time of the fire.  Damages are estimated at $3,663.





TECHNICAL RESCUE – Saint Paul Firefighters responded to the 600 block of West Minnehaha Avenue on June 17th at 10:22 am for a report of a 65 year old male on 20 foot high scaffolding who went unconscious while doing volunteer work on a home.  He was removed from the scaffolding, treated, and transported to an area hospital.

VEHICLE FIRE – ARSON – On June 18th at 12:47 pm, Saint Paul Firefighters responded to a report of a vehicle fire on the 700 block of Blair Avenue.  The investigation determined the fire was the result of arson.  Saint Paul Arson and Police are continuing to investigate.  Anyone with any information on this or any other arson fire is urged to call the Minnesota Arson Hotline at 1-800-723-2020.

DWELLING FIRE – Saint Paul Firefighters responded to a report of smoke in the area of the 100 block of Maple Street on June 18th at 10:06 pm.  The arrived to find the smoke was coming from a house.  Firefighters entered the home to extinguish the fire but had to be ordered out when the first floor began to collapse.  No one was home at the time of the fire but firefighters found and attempted to resuscitate a dog found in the home.  Regrettably, the dog did not survive.  The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.  Damages are estimated at $91,000.

EXTERIOR DWELLING FIRE – On June 19th at 5:50 pm, Saint Paul Firefighters responded to a fire on the exterior of a home on the 1000 block of Arkwright Street.  One of the occupants had been smoking and threw a cigarette butt out the window which landed on a roof and started the siding on fire.  Damages are estimated at $1000.  Place discarded smoking materials in a wide, deep metal or glass ashtray!  



BASEMENT FIRE – Saint Paul Firefighters responded to a report of smoke in a dwelling on the 100 block of Charles Avenue on June 20th at 1:39 pm.  They arrived to find and extinguish a small fire in the basement of the dwelling.  The investigation determined the fire was likely caused by a malfunctioning dehumidifier unit.  Damages are estimated at $85,000.

VEHICLE FIRE – ARSON – On June 20th at 10:05, Saint Paul Firefighters responded to a report of a vehicle fire at Hoyt Avenue and Edgerton Street.  The investigation determined the fire was likely caused by arson.  Anyone with any information on this or any other arson fire is urged to call the Minnesota Arson Hotline at 1-800-723-2020.




FIRE PREVENTION AND SAFETY EDUCATION – Saint Paul Fire Department’s Public Educators presented a series of four fire safety demonstrations at the Fairview MS Achievement Center.  Attendees learned about the importance of working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, escape planning, fire prevention, how to put out a fire, why you should never put water on a grease fire, and more.  To schedule a fire prevention and safety presentation for your group, please call us at 651-228-6203.
