FIRE PREVENTION EDUCATION – Over the last week, Saint Paul Fire Department’s Fire and Life Safety Educators have taught over 600 preschool, elementary school, and middle school students at Laura Jeffries Academy, Hmong Prep Academy, Bruce Vento Elementary, and Wheelock ECFE (pictured below) about how to prevent fires and injuries, what to do if there is a fire, and some of the tools and gear firefighters use when responding to emergencies.

HEAT EXPOSURE – On May 19th, Saint Paul Firefighter/Paramedics and EMTs were called to the 200 block of West 7th Street at 1:48 pm for two year old twin males who’d been accidentally locked in a vehicle for approximately 20 minutes.  The males were evaluated and showed no signs of injury or illness. Their mother declined further medical attention.

LABOR – Saint Paul Firefighter/Paramedics and EMTs responded to a birthing center on the 900 block of Grand Avenue on May 20th at 11:16 am for a 31 year old pregnant female in labor.  At the staff and patient’s request she was transported to an area hospital due to lack of progress with labor.

APARTMENT FIRE – On May 20th, Saint Paul Firefighters responded at 9:39 pm to a report of smoke in an apartment building on the 1000 block of Arkwright Street North.  Firefighters arrived to find and extinguish a fire in the bathroom of an apartment.  The occupant stated she lit a candle in the bathroom, left in unattended, later smelled smoke and returned to the bathroom to find flames.  Damages are estimated at $90,000.  Blow out candles any time you left the room or go to bed.  Or even better, use battery-operated flameless candles!

Both the occupants and their neighbors had been having legal recreational fires that night.  It is believed either an ember from one of the recreational fires or a discarded cigarette caused the fire.  Damages are estimated at $500.
