This
feature we call “Fire & EMS Blotter” is a weekly update of the activities
of the Saint Paul Fire Department.
During the week of May 18th through May 24th, the
Saint Paul Fire Department responded to 861 calls for service. Here is a sampling of some of the emergency and
non-emergency activities from information provided by the fire department.
 FIRE PREVENTION
EDUCATION – Over the
last week, Saint Paul Fire Department’s Fire and Life Safety Educators have
taught over 600 preschool, elementary school, and middle school students at
Laura Jeffries Academy, Hmong Prep Academy, Bruce Vento Elementary, and
Wheelock ECFE (pictured below) about how to prevent fires and injuries, what to
do if there is a fire, and some of the tools and gear firefighters use when
responding to emergencies.

HEAT EXPOSURE – On May 19th, Saint Paul
Firefighter/Paramedics and EMTs were called to the 200 block of West 7th
Street at 1:48 pm for two year old twin males who’d been accidentally locked in
a vehicle for approximately 20 minutes.
The males were evaluated and showed no signs of injury or illness. Their
mother declined further medical attention.
LABOR – Saint Paul Firefighter/Paramedics and
EMTs responded to a birthing center on the 900 block of Grand Avenue on May 20th
at 11:16 am for a 31 year old pregnant female in labor. At the staff and patient’s request she was transported
to an area hospital due to lack of progress with labor.

APARTMENT FIRE – On May 20th, Saint Paul Firefighters
responded at 9:39 pm to a report of smoke in an apartment building on the 1000
block of Arkwright Street North.
Firefighters arrived to find and extinguish a fire in the bathroom of an
apartment. The occupant stated she lit a
candle in the bathroom, left in unattended, later smelled smoke and returned to
the bathroom to find flames. Damages are
estimated at $90,000. Blow
out candles any time you left the room or go to bed. Or even better, use battery-operated
flameless candles!

LABOR – Saint Paul Firefighter/Paramedics and
EMTs were called to the West 7th neighborhood on May 21st
at 3:52 am for a 24 year old pregnant female in labor. She was treated and transported to an area
hospital.

GARAGE FIRE – Saint Paul Firefighters were called to
the 1600 block of Minnehaha Avenue East on May 22nd at 1:28 am for a
report of a detached garage fire.
Firefighters arrived to find the occupants had extinguished the fire
with a garden hose. Both the occupants and their neighbors had been having
legal recreational fires that night. It
is believed either an ember from one of the recreational fires or a discarded
cigarette caused the fire. Damages are
estimated at $500.

GUNSHOT WOUND – On May 22nd at 6:04 pm,
Saint Paul Firefighter/Paramedics and EMTs were called to the 700 block of Thomas
Avenue West for a 54 year old male who had been shot in the chest. The male was treated for his injuries and
transported to an area hospital.
GUNSHOT WOUND – Saint Paul Firefighter/Paramedics and
EMTs were called to a parking lot on the 1600 block of Albemarle Street at 6:28
pm for a 61 year old male with an apparent gunshot wound to the leg. The male was treated for his injuries and transported
to an area hospital.

DUMPSTER FIRE – ARSON – Saint Paul Firefighters were called to
a report of a dumpster on fire on the 300 block of Robert Street South on May
22nd at 10:25 p.m. An
investigation determined the fire was caused by arson.

CARBON MONOXIDE – On May 23rd at 5:23 am,
Saint Paul Firefighters responded to a report of a carbon monoxide alarm
sounding in an apartment on the 200 block of Ruth Street North. Firefighters found carbon monoxide readings
in the apartment and requested a medic unit to evaluate the occupant and Excel
Energy to address the carbon monoxide issue.
Minimal or no carbon monoxide readings were found in other apartment
units in the building. Have a working carbon monoxide alarm on
every level of your home!
 GARAGE FIRE – Saint Paul Firefighters were called to
the 800 block of Hubbard Avenue on May 23rd at 2:37 pm for a report
of a fire on the outside of a garage.
They arrived to find fire on the exterior of a detached garage,
extending to the roof line and into the garage.
The occupant stated he was burning wood in a fire pit and left a family
member to tend the fire while he ran an errand. There was no smoke or fire
coming from the logs by the garage when the occupant left. The family member was not present with the
occupant returned. The cause of the fire
is currently undetermined. Damages are
estimated at $2000.
