News: WEEKLY SAINT PAUL FIRE & EMS BLOTTER

This feature we call “Fire & EMS Blotter” is a weekly update of the activities of the Saint Paul Fire Department.  During the week of March 30th through April 5th, the Saint Paul Fire Department responded to 693 calls for service. Here is a sampling of some of the emergency and non-emergency activities from information provided by the fire department.

camper fire

CAMPER FIRE – On March 30th at 5:20 am, Saint Paul Firefighters were called to the 900 block of Wilson Avenue for a report of a camper on fire.  The fire began in an interior engine dog house between the front seats of the vehicle.  The fire remains under investigation.  Damages are estimated at $3,100.

stove top fire

STOVETOP FIRE – Saint Paul Firefighters were called to the 300 block of Arundel Street on March 30th at 11:45 am for a report of a stove top fire in an apartment building.  When firefighters arrived, they found two StoveTop FireStops had put out the fire.  The occupant had been cooking when the power went out and forgot to turn off the burner.  While the power was still out, she placed plastic items on the stove top.  When power was restored, the plastics caught on fire and activated the StoveTop FireStops which had been installed by the building’s management. The fire was put out before it could spread beyond the stove top or cause more than minimal damage to the stove hood. Damages are estimated at $150. Stove top fire extinguishers are a great way to limit the damage from a stove top fire.  They can be purchased at local Frattalone’s Ace Hardware stores or Saint Paul homeowners can get StoveTop FireStops, smoke alarms, and a carbon monoxide alarm for FREE by participating in Project Safe Haven. Call 651-228-6273 for more information on Project Safe Haven.

MOTOR VEHICLE CRASH – On April 1st at 3:19 am, Saint Paul Firefighter/Paramedics and EMTs responded to the area of Earl Street and Beech Street for a vehicle that crashed into a tree. The 20 year old male driver, who was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, was not alert and having a seizure.  He was treated and transported to an area hospital.

STABBING – Saint Paul Firefighter/Paramedics and EMTs responded to the Frogtown neighborhood on April 1st at 11:00 pm for a 27 year old male with multiple stab wounds to his shoulder, arm, and hand.  He was treated and transported to an area hospital.

boat fire

BOAT FIRE – On April 3rd at 1:11 pm, Saint Paul Firefighters were called to the 400 block of Jessamine Avenue East for a report of a boat fire.  Firefighters arrived to find a boat fully engulfed in flames with fire extending to a second boat.  The boat owner stated he was siphoning gas out of his boat through a hose to an open bucket when he saw fire.  He was burned while attempting to smother the fire with his shirt and was treated and taken to an area hospital for his injuries. The fire was likely caused by static electricity from the gas siphoning. Damages are estimated at $200.

MOTOR VEHICLE CRASH – On April 5th at 12:28 am, Saint Paul Firefighter/Paramedics and EMTs were called to the 400 block of Dayton Avenue for a 33 year old female driver of a vehicle which had crashed into a retaining wall in a residential area.  She was uncooperative and combative with police officers who attempted to assist her from her vehicle and she continued to be uncooperative and combative with police and medics who transported her to an area hospital.

resident's life saved by fire sprinkler

CARELESS SMOKING FIRE - FIRE SPRINKLER SAVED LIFE – On April 5th at 5:33 am, Saint Paul Firefighters were called to the 600 block of Maryland Avenue West for a report of alarms sounding and a possible kitchen fire.  Firefighters arrived to find a small fire under control with a man sitting in a wheelchair next to a recliner that was on fire.  The man said he had been smoking and fell asleep.  The cigarette ignited the oxygen nasal cannula the man was using and the fire spread to the recliner, clothing on the floor, and along the oxygen tubing back to his oxygen concentrator.  The man was not mobile and would have likely died if the fire sprinklers had not controlled the fire.  Firefighters rescued the man and put out the remaining fire.  He was taken to a local hospital for smoke inhalation.  Damages are estimated at $11,000.  Never smoke while drowsy or while on medical oxygen!  Residential fire sprinklers save lives and property.  Learn more about residential fire sprinklers here: www.homefiresprinkler.org, and check out this dramatic six minute video produced by the City of Saint Paul:  https://www.youtube.com/watchv=gihZ6E4yKc4&feature=youtu.be

garage fire

GARAGE FIRE – On April 5th at 5:17 am, Saint Paul Firefighters were called to the 300 block of LaFond Avenue for a report of black smoke coming from a detached garage.  Firefighters arrived to find a locked garage with smoke coming from it, entered the garage and quickly extinguished a small fire.  The fire was caused by a carelessly discarded cigarette.  Damages are estimated at $1,500.

unattended cooking fire

COOKING FIRE – On April 5th at 7:09 am, Saint Paul Firefighters responded to an apartment on the 200 block of Hoyt Avenue West for a report of a kitchen fire.  Firefighters arrived to find the fire already extinguished by the resident.  The resident stated he was heating oil on the stovetop while he was in the other room watching television.  He returned to the kitchen to find a small amount of fire in the pot and then moved the pot to the sink and turned on water, which caused the fire to flash up on the wall near the sink before it went out.  Damages are estimated at $100.  Stay and look when you cook to prevent fires like this!  If you do have a small cooking fire, slide a lid on the pot and turn the burner off – never put water on a grease fire!  This resident is VERY LUCKY to not be burned and the fire did not spread to the cabinets above the sink.

STABBING – Saint Paul Firefighter/Paramedics and EMTs were called to the West Side neighborhood on April 5th at 7:00 pm for a 38 year old male who had been stabbed in the leg.  He was treated and transported to an area hospital.
