News: WEEKLY SAINT PAUL FIRE & EMS BLOTTER

This feature we call “Fire & EMS Blotter” is a weekly update of the activities of the Saint Paul Fire Department.  During the week of January 27th through February 2nd, the Saint Paul Fire Department responded to 809 calls for service. Here is a sampling of some of the emergency and non-emergency activities from information provided by the fire department.

With the recent snowfall, please shovel out around the fire hydrants in your neighborhood and at your workplace.  Easily accessible fire hydrants mean firefighters can get water on a fire faster in order to save lives and property!

Stove fire caused by unattended child

COOKING FIRE CAUSED BY YOUTH FIRE PLAY – On February 1st at 11:41 a.m., Saint Paul Firefighters responded to the 2000 block of East Orange Avenue for a report of a dwelling fire.  Firefighters arrived to find a kitchen fire that had started on the stovetop and was already extinguished.  A resident said that while the adults in the home were sleeping, a 4 year old child was playing and turned one of the stove burners to the “on” position, igniting cooking oil left in a pot on the stovetop.  Smoke alarms woke the sleeping residents who found the fire and turned the burner off, extinguishing the fire.  Damages are estimated at $7,000.  Be sure to supervise young children and use child-resistant knobs on your stove.  The results of this fire would have been much more severe if working smoke alarms had not woken the residents!  Check your smoke alarms monthly, replace the battery yearly, and replace the alarm every 10 years.  Saint Paul homeowners can have their smoke alarms checked and replaced for FREE as part of Project Safe Haven by calling 651-228-6273.
