Saint Paul Fire Department is hosting
OPEN HOUSES for Fire Prevention Week
“Hear
the Beep Where You Sleep” is This Year’s Theme
SAINT PAUL – Did you know that
roughly half of home fire deaths result from fires reported between 11 p.m. and
7 a.m., when most people are asleep? The
key message of this year's Fire Prevention Week campaign, October 4-10, is to
install working smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate
sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including the basement. Larger
homes may need more alarms. Smoke alarms
need to be tested monthly and the batteries replaced annually. “When you change your clocks, change your
batteries,” says the International Association of Fire Chiefs. When you change your clocks this month back
to Central Time, replace the batteries in all of your smoke and carbon monoxide
alarms. Smoke alarms, themselves, should
be replaced after 10 year; carbon monoxide alarms after 5 years.
Fire Prevention Week was
established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871
conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless,
destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire
began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9,
1871.
In recognition of national Fire
Prevention Week the Saint Paul Fire Department is hosting open houses in three
of its fire stations on Saturday,
October 10 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Each open house will be a tour of a working
Saint Paul firehouse where you can meet the real firefighters and paramedics
that serve Saint Paul and check out their equipment, fire trucks and ambulances. Each station will also have a live-fire
demonstration of kitchen fire safety – the leading cause of building fires in
Minnesota. Each station will also have
one other special event. The open houses
and activities will be held:
·
Fire Station #1, 1000 W. 7th
St. – 12:15 will be the
kitchen fire safety demonstration
1:00 will be an automobile rescue demonstration
·
Fire Station #7, 1038 Ross Av. – 11:00 will be the kitchen fire safety
demonstration
1:00 will be an automobile rescue
demonstration
·
Fire Station #14, 111 Snelling Av. N.- 10:00-2:00 will be learning hands only
CPR
1:30 will be the kitchen fire safety

Fire safety specialists will be
on hand to help you make your home safer from fire. Your home is where you may feel safe, but
it’s where you are the most vulnerable to a fire. Every fire fatality in Saint Paul has been in
the home or apartment. Careless cooking is the leading cause of
building fires in Minnesota – and they’re ALL PREVENTABLE. You’ll see a dramatic live-fire demonstration
how to prevent cooking fires, what you SHOULD DO when you have one, and what
you SHOULD NEVER DO.
Learn how you can sign up for Project
Safe Haven and have Saint Paul Firefighters come to your home to
install FREE smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, and stovetop fire
extinguishers. We want to help you make
your home a “safe haven” from fire.
There will be games and free giveaways for children as well so please bring the whole family! MEDIA ARE WELCOME, TOO.
In the event that new information
becomes available, it will first be publicized through the Saint Paul Fire
Department’s Twitter account, @StPaulFireDept.
