GARAGE FIRE – On September 10th at 6:20 pm, the Saint Paul Fire Department was called to the report of a two-car detached garage on fire on the 900 block of Hawthorne Avenue.  An investigation determined the fire started on a work bench in the area of a hot plate.  The owner reported plugging in the hot plate earlier but turning it off with a light switch, however the owner’s spouse may have turned on the switch when leaving approximately 20 minutes before the fire was reported.  It is believed combustible materials near the hot plate ignited, causing the fire.

MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT – A 62 year old man was injured when his motorcycle struck another motor vehicle on September 12 at 7:04 p.m. at the intersection of Jackson St. and Mount Airy St. He was not wearing a helmet.  Paramedic treated him and transported him to a hospital.

arson

ARSON – On September 12th at 11:34 pm, firefighters were called to the 500 block of Minnehaha Avenue West for a report of smoke coming from the rear of a building.  Firefighters arrived to find a van and 30-yard dumpster fully involved in fire.  The fire was intentionally set. Saint Paul Police are investigating.

CHIMNEY FIRE – On September 12th at 8:06 pm fire crews were called to the report of a house fire on the 800 block of St. Clair Avenue.  Firefighters arrived to find a chimney fire with smoke on the first and second floors of the home.  A malfunctioning flue cable was found to have caused smoke to back up into the home and cause sparks in the chimney.  The residents stated it had been quite some time since they had they chimney cleaned.

  • Be sure to have your chimney and fireplace cleaned and inspected by a professional every year before using it!

charcoal

DWELLING FIRE – On September 13th at 2:25 pm, firefighters responded to the 500 block of Rice Street for a report of smoke in a basement.  They arrived to find burning charcoal embers in a window well that had caught leaves and trash on fire, causing smoke to enter the basement and first floor of the building. Witnesses stated an individual dumped the ashes from his grille in the window well, perhaps thinking it was a sewer drain.

  • Always dispose of charcoal ashes correctly – soak with water and place in a metal container with a lid, keeping them away from all combustible materials.  Never dump ashes down a sewer drain!

GAS ODOR – On September 15 at 2:40 pm, the Saint Paul Fire Department was called to the Minnesota Department of Health building on Robert Street for a report of a natural gas smell in the building.  Crews investigated with monitors and found no readings and no gas odors.  Occupants, who had been evacuated, were allowed back in the building once crews determined there was no natural gas or other harmful gas present.
