Emerald Ash Borer Monitoring

Emerald Ash Borer Monitoring

Emerald ash borer (EAB) is an invasive forest insect responsible for the deaths of millions of ash trees. In April 2019, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) placed Stearns County under an emergency quarantine after emerald ash borer (EAB) was found in the city of Sauk Centre.

Damaged trees

Volunteers are being asked to walk in the parks or along trails looking for trees with woodpecker feeding damages. Monitoring occurs from March 25, 2021 to April 23, 2021.

Stearns County Parks is asking for your assistance to monitor:

  • the number of epicormic shoots
  • bark splits
  • woodpecker feeding damage
  • upper canopy damage
  • lower canopy damage
  • trunk damage

A report should be submitted for each cluster or individual ash species tree.

Parks include Clearwater River Canoe Access, Heim’s Mill, Kraemer Lake-Wildwood, Lake Sylvia, Miller Landing, Mississippi River, Oak Township, Quarry Park, Rockville, Spring Hill, St. Martin, Two Rivers Lake, Upper Spunk Lake, and Warner Lake.
Trails include Beaver Island and Lake Wobegon Trail.
