TUESDAYS, OCTOBER 17-NOVEMBER 7 (9:30 AM): JFK HIDDEN HISTORY BOOK CLUB As we approach the 60th anniversary of JFK’s assassination, this course will provide you the opportunity to engage in discussion regarding this controversial event.
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 17 (1 PM): THE ABCS OF NIL-UNDERSTANDING THE CHANGING LANDSCAPE OF COLLEGE SPORTS On July 1, 2021, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules changed to allow college athletes to make money off of their name, image and likenesses (NIL), reversing the organization's long-held policy regarding amateurism and financial compensation. This lecture will discuss this new NCAA policy and its impact on college sport. While there are benefits to NIL, it has also highlighted race, gender and social class issues in sports. There are questions about which athletes are benefitting the most from this policy. This lecture will define NIL, discuss what it means to college sports and add social context to the business of college sports. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19 (1 PM): ROCK HILL'S FIRST FEMALE MAYOR-THE RIGHT WOMAN AT THE RIGHT TIME Elizabeth Josephine Rhea was in many ways an unlikely candidate to be the first female mayor of Rock Hill. "Betty Jo" started out as a housewife with few political ambitions. How did her life evolve to where she became a force in both Rock Hill and South Carolina politics? Her personal history parallels Rock Hill's history as it transitioned from a textile town to a city of diverse businesses. Hear the stories behind Cherry Park, Empowering the Vision and the rebirth of downtown Rock Hill, peppered with laugh-out-loud stories from the personal life of this vibrant woman.
