Programs

OCTOBER 3: TAPPING INTO THE AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER
Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) represent a heterogeneous collection of neurodevelopmental disorders which are relatively common. Although heterogeneous, ASDs have some clinical signs that are considered core findings: impairment of social interactions, communication issues and repetitive behaviors. With a rise in the prevalence of ASD, there has been an increase in interest in identifying both biomarkers and the causation for ASDs. Come learn as Dr. Schwartz leads you through some of the latest findings regarding ASDs and the complexities associated with them.

OCTOBER 3: NATIVE AMERICAN STUDIES CENTER (NASC)
Following the Coffee & Conversation on Catawba Pottery and Native Americans in South Carolina, Dr. Criswell will provide a guided tour at the NASC in Lancaster where guests can further their education about the culture and heritage of Native Americans. *Transportation will be provided for this tour.

OCTOBER 4: HAND STAMPED GREETING CARDS
Do you love to send greeting cards? Register for one of these classes to make various cards using stamps, ink and paper. A card example will be provided and all pieces for the card will be precut for you. All you will need to do is stamp the image and put it together. Regardless of your level of creativity, this fun card making class is for you!

OCTOBER 5: THE BLEACHERY-ROCK HILL'S GREATEST BUSINESS EMPIRE (MORE SEATS ADDED!)
Old textile mills sites are extremely common throughout the Carolinas. People who have been in Rock Hill for 40 years or less may look at today's University Center site and think, "just another old textile mill.” But, this old textile mill, known locally as The Bleachery, was something extraordinary. In this program, you will learn the history of the greatest business enterprise ever to locate in Rock Hill or York County. You'll learn how this one business dramatically impacted the growth of Rock Hill and the lives of its citizens for almost 70 years. We will explore the Bleachery's special role in the US textile industry and how it helped to shape local and national events. Thousands of families in Rock Hill and York County were shaped by their ties to The Bleachery. They are your neighbors, your classmates, perhaps your parents or grandparents. Come and learn their stories of living and working in a community dominated by the world's largest cloth bleaching, printing and finishing plant.

OCTOBER 5: BOOK TALK-REAL FRIENDS TALK ABOUT RACE
In this book by Yseult P. Mukantabana and Hannah Summerhill, the authors discuss the importance of building healthy relationships across racial divides by confronting difficult topics while doing so with love and candor. PRT staff will guide participants through meaningful conversation. The book is available through SC Lends or for purchase on Amazon for $15-$23 (ISBN: 978-0778387053).
