Community Recycling Rewarded through the Bags to Benches Program
A new park bench has been installed at Northside Recreation Center, thanks to community recycling efforts and a program called Bags to Benches offered by Trex, Inc. To earn the free bench made of Trex recycled film plastic, citizens collected 591 pounds of plastic bags, overwrap, and flexible packaging at drop-off sites at the four City of Rock Hill Recreation Centers.
The Bags to Benches initiative was launched locally in December 2019 by the Rock Hill Clean & Green Board with the 591 pounds representing collections through February 2020. Volunteers with the Clean & Green Board collect the bags from the drop-off sites, weigh them and take them to Harris Teeter to add to their plastic bag recycling program. The Bags to Benches program helps keep film plastic out of the landfill and out of curbside recycling bins since the City is no longer able to accept these items.

Collections continue at drop-off boxes inside the recreation centers during their hours of operation. Boxes are located at Boyd Hill Center (1165 Constitution Blvd.), Emmett Scott Center (801 Crawford Rd.), Fewell Park Center (1204 Alexander Rd.), and Northside Center (900 Annafrel St.).
