  County leaders share ideas at annual conference
This week, members of Richland County Council and Administration are learning and networking at the S.C. Association of Counties' (SCAC) Annual Conference. The event unites county leaders to enhance their public servitude through expert speakers, small group discussions and engaging workshops.
This year, a number of Richland County leaders were recognized for completing SCAC’s Institute of Government, which strengthens officials’ knowledge and leadership abilities through enriching courses. Graduates of the Institute of Government included:
- Councilwoman Tish Dozier Alleyne (District 8), Level I and II
- Councilman Jason Branham (District 1), Level I
- Treasurer Kendra L. Dove, Level I
- Councilwoman Cheryl English (District 10), Level II
- Councilwoman Tyra Little (District 3), Level I and II
- Council Vice Chair Derrek Pugh (District 2), Level II

 Fire department toasts summer program's young graduates
Last Friday, Richland County leaders, including Council Vice Chair Derrek Pugh and Assistant County Administrator John Thompson, helped celebrate graduates of the Columbia-Richland Fire Department's Summer Youth Empowerment Academy. Vice Chair Pugh gave remarks at the graduation ceremony in Columbia.
The Youth Empowerment Academy, a partnership between the fire department and the Columbia Urban League, gives teens a firsthand view of a day in the life of a firefighter. The program focused on career-building and essential first aid skills. Participants also visited other agencies to learn about the duties of EMTs and the S.C. Law Enforcement Division.

Conservation advocates talk concerns, priorities at forum
On Tuesday, the annual Richland County Local Working Group meeting gave local and state agencies, farmers and the public a chance to discuss natural resource concerns in the County and to identify conservation priorities for Farm Bill programs.
The Richland Soil and Water Conservation District and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service hosted the meeting. Information collected will be used to generate recommendations for local, state and federal spending.

Employees earn kudos for valuable service to residents
Richland County personnel were recently recognized for setting a high bar for remarkable service:
- A resident contacted the County Ombudsman to commend Mia Martin, of the County Assessor's Office. The resident said Martin provided patience and understanding and went "above and beyond" in her service.
- A second resident recognized Kimberly Aiken, also of the Assessor's Office. The resident said Aiken was informative, patient and professional while helping with a legal residence application.
- Another resident contacted the County to commend Denique Brooks, of the Ombudsman's Office. The resident complimented Brooks on her professionalism and pleasant nature during a recent interaction.

Sean Busbee, with Community Planning and Development, was also recognized. A respondent noted that Busbee was flexible, patient, professional and helpful during their interaction.
