  Fatherhood, fraternity and footwork: Council celebrates local entities for success, advocacy
During Richland County Council's meeting Tuesday, Councilmembers recognized three local entities:
- A resolution named June as Forging Strong Fathers and Families Month in Richland County, acknowledging the efforts of the S.C. Center for Fathers and Families to position fathers for success through education, access to resources and advocacy.
- A proclamation honored the Omicron Iota Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. for four decades of service. The chapter recently celebrated its 40th charter anniversary.
- A proclamation praised the Blythewood High School girls track team for achieving a "four-peat," after the team won the S.C. High School League Class 5A Division I title for the fourth straight year.

Appreciation party honors Ag + Art supporters
On Sunday, the Richland Soil and Water Conservation District (RSWCD) hosted supporters of the County’s Ag + Art Tour at a Volunteer Appreciation Party in downtown Columbia.
The event gave volunteers, sponsors and tour site hosts a chance to mingle and celebrate the people who make the annual tour possible. County Councilmembers Paul Livingston, Allison Terracio and Don Weaver gave remarks, as well as RSWCD staff and site participants.
The Ag + Art Tour takes place at sites across Richland County this weekend, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 7 and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 7.

 Department leaders share insights with small businesses
On Thursday, entrepreneurs and small-business owners got essential information for doing business with Richland County Government in a workshop hosted by the County’s Office of Small Business Opportunity (OSBO) in Columbia.
The workshop featured leaders from several County departments, including the Business Service Center, Planning and Development Services, Operational Services and Public Works. Attendees learned about an array of topics related to the County’s procurement process, including:
- An overview of the solicitation portal
- Navigating bid opportunities
- Requirements for registration and submission
- Vendor tips and resources
Estate planning, asset management focus of workshop
Various types of trusts. Power of attorney rights for aging parents. Considerations for choosing an executor for your estate. Probate Judge Amy McCulloch addressed these and other topics at a SPEED leadership training May 28, hosted by the Richland County Neighborhood Improvement Program.
Judge McCulloch gave an overview of trusts and how these documents are used for asset management, enriching attendees' understanding of estate planning.

Workplaces need to pivot to move forward, speaker advises
On Tuesday, Richland County Human Resources hosted a quarterly training for staff in Columbia. The discussion featured keynote speaker Dr. Rebecca Battle-Bryant, director of the Office of Statewide Workforce Development, part of the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce.
Dr. Battle-Bryant spoke with County staff about agencies' need to pivot in order to attract, hire and retain younger generations in today’s workforce. She emphasized the importance of identifying marketable skills in addition to formal education, and creating strong internship programs to help develop tomorrow's professionals.
