On Thursday morning, Richland County personnel participated in Career Day at William S. Sandel Elementary School in Columbia. County staff with various departments, including Animal Services, Emergency Services, Public Works, the Sheriff's Department and Utilities, took time to discuss their diverse duties with inquisitive students.
The event opened up potential career opportunities to students, courtesy of County staff, who demonstrated mosquito control, gave a tour of an EMS vehicle, showed the mechanics of operating an excavator, and more.

 Accelerator Lab to help train workers for clean energy field
Goodwill Industries of the Upstate/Midlands South Carolina held an open house and ribbon-cutting event Friday at its new Midlands Clean Tech Accelerator Lab in Columbia. The Clean Tech Accelerator is a facility for job training and job placement; qualifying trainees learn to become certified installers or technicians in solar and storage, heat pump, and electric vehicle supply equipment.
At 555 St. Andrews Road, the Accelerator's location features more than 2,500 feet of training and classroom space.
County Council Vice Chair Derrek Pugh (District 2), S.C. Attorney General Alan Wilson, and Goodwill regional staff were on hand to support Friday's event.
Conference aims to change children's outcomes for better
On Friday, child welfare professionals and children's advocates met for Richland County CASA’s CARE (Community Advocates Reaching Everyone) Conference.
Attendees discussed how legal and government entities, guardians ad litem, and affected families can work together to improve the well-being of children in the County’s Family Court system. County Treasurer Kendra L. Dove was among the speakers at the conference, held at Midlands Technical College’s Airport campus in West Columbia.

County Assessor elected to statewide Executive Board

Richland County Assessor Fred Descy has been elected to the Executive Board for the County Assessors of South Carolina. His term runs through 2027. Descy was also recently re-elected to a second term as Vice President of the Midlands for the S.C. Association of Assessing Officials.
Descy has been the County's Assessor since March 2022 and has been with the Assessor’s Office since 2003.

Heroes shine at awards ceremony for CRFD firefighters
The Columbia-Richland Fire Department honored the exemplary work of its members at the department’s annual awards ceremony in February.
Thirty-eight awards were presented during the event at C.A. Johnson High School in Columbia, with a majority of honors going to firefighters who went above and beyond the call of duty to save civilian lives.
