 County Government offices closing for Christmas
To observe Christmas, Richland County Government offices will be closed from Wednesday, Dec. 24 through Friday, Dec. 26.
All County Solid Waste and Recycling (SWR) facilities, including drop-off and recycling centers, will also close during that time. SWR facilities will reopen Saturday, Dec. 27. There will be no curbside collection service Christmas Day, Thursday, Dec. 25. Service will resume Friday, with all curbside collection pushed back a day.
While offices are closed, many services are accessible on the County’s website, including those by the Auditor, Treasurer, Assessor and other offices.

District 7 Councilwoman Gretchen D. Cooper’s Holiday Classic basketball tournament was a slam dunk Sunday. Children ages 9 to 15 enjoyed fitness, fellowship and free throws while competing for a championship at Meadowlake Park in Columbia. Parents and community members cheered from the sidelines as the players brought their best to the court.
The Richland County Recreation Commission and Richland County Sheriff's Department collaborated with Councilwoman Cooper to organize this event, bringing children and families together for a fierce but fun afternoon of holiday hoops. Even Santa stopped by to shoot a few festive free throws.

On Monday, Richland County EMS staff delivered loads of toys and gifts donated through its annual “Stuff an Ambulance” toy drive at the County's Judicial Center in downtown Columbia. The donations will go to children within the County's family court system who are part of Richland County CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) and the County's Guardian Ad Litem program.
CASA and EMS employees worked to unload gifts from several ambulances. "Stuff an Ambulance" encourages donations of toys, blankets, socks, book bags and other essential items to brighten the holiday season for children who might otherwise go without.

County Administrator graduates with distinction from detention center training program
Last week, County Administrator Leonardo Brown graduated from the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy as a member of Basic Detention Class 482. The academy’s Basic Detention program is a three-week training set up to provide officer candidates with the essential knowledge, skills and expertise to perform the role of certified detention officer in the state.
In addition to receiving his Class II Law Enforcement Officer certification, Brown also received the Distinguished Graduate Award, given to students who attain a cumulative academic score of at least 96 percent average.
As a part of his County leadership responsibilities, Brown serves as facility administrator for Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in Columbia.
District 10 town hall brings neighborhood concerns to table
On Dec. 11, Councilwoman Cheryl English (District 10) hosted a town hall with staff from various County departments to discuss programs, services and key issues affecting residents. Topics included an update on the 2025 Comprehensive Plan, roads and infrastructure development, solid waste management and neighborhood enhancement.
Public Works Director Mike Maloney and Solid Waste & Recycling General Manager Syndi Castelluccio were among the speakers.

Small-business owners hear about procurement prospects
On Tuesday, the Richland County Office of Small Business Opportunity invited members of County-certified Small Local Business Enterprises to hear Dr. James Lipscomb, director of compliance for Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center (ASGDC), discuss procurement opportunities at the facility. Small-business owners heard about ways to gain access to potential business contracts with ASGDC.

Homeownership Assistance Workshop (full)
6 p.m.-7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, County Sheriff’s Department Annex, 2500 Decker Blvd., Columbia This workshop will educate residents on the homeownership process. Eligible individuals or families can receive a deferred forgivable loan of up to $24,500 to assist with down payment and closing costs. Registration for this event is full. More information
