Richland Soil and Water Conservation District Giving Away Free Seeds for Fall
The Richland Soil and Water Conservation District (RSWCD)’s Seed Sanctuary program is sprouting again – just in time to plant seeds for cooler weather. Richland County residents can obtain up to four packets of vegetable, herb and wildflower seeds for free at the County Administration Building (2020 Hampton St., Columbia) or Richland Library Eastover (608 Main St., Eastover). Residents can also request seeds by mail via Google form.
In addition, RSWCD staff will distribute seeds via Pop-Up Seed Sanctuary appearances at community events throughout the growing season. To request a Pop-Up Seed Sanctuary appearance, email Chelsea Holliday, RSWCD’s administrative assistant of outreach and community engagement. Availability is limited, and requests will be fulfilled on a first-come, first-served basis.
RSWCD launched the Seed Sanctuary in 2020 to encourage home gardening, food security and pollinator conservation. It has continued to flower, with staff and community volunteers distributing more than 47,400 seed packets since then. For information on volunteering, visit the County's website.
