PUBLIC NOTICE
The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) will begin converting the intersection of Mechanic and Queen to an all-way stop on Tuesday, September 1, 2026 for field testing.
What to Expect
Prior to September 1:
- STOP signs will be installed on all four legs of the intersection.
- The new STOP signs will initially be covered with bags and will not be in effect.
- NOTICE signs explaining the upcoming change will also be installed on all four approaches.
September 1:
- SCDOT will place the existing traffic signal into an all-red flashing pattern.
- The covers will be removed from the STOP signs, making the intersection a four-way/all-way stop.
- Motorists should come to a complete stop at each approach and proceed only when it is safe to do so.
Following the Change: SCDOT will monitor the intersection and traffic operations for 90 days to evaluate the change.`
Drivers: Please Use Caution
Drivers are encouraged to slow down, pay attention to the new traffic pattern, and follow all posted STOP signs as motorists adjust to the change. Please allow additional time when traveling through the intersection, particularly during the initial transition period.
