At its regular meeting and second public hearing on June 3, the Hilton Head Island Town Council accepted (7-0) the second reading of the Town Manager’s proposed fiscal year (FY) 2026 consolidated budget, a balanced and strategic financial plan totaling $174,711,350 million in projected revenues and scheduled expenditures. It spans six major funds and includes a 2-millage (mills) property tax rate reduction, decreasing the rate from 21.4 mills to 19.4 mills, and reflects the Town's ongoing commitment to fiscal responsibility and service to residents. The budget encompasses the following:
- General Fund - $59.7M
- Capital Improvements Program (CIP) Fund
- Beach renourishment - $47.5M
- Other capital improvement projects - $30.2M
- Debt Service Fund - 18.9M
- Stormwater Utility Fund - $11.1M
- Workforce Housing Fund - $4M
- Gullah Geechee Historic Neighborhoods Community Development Corporation Fund - $3.3M

The Town of Hilton Head Island has begun construction on traffic safety improvements along Gumtree Road, Mathews Drive and Squire Pope Road. Work started on June 2 and will continue intermittently through July 31.
The project will include new pavement markings at all crosswalks, milling and paving to remove the pavement patterns as needed, adjustment of signs to meet standards, and the addition of crosswalk signs as needed.
All work will occur overnight from 7:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. to minimize traffic disruption and will take place on the following dates:
- June 2-6
- June 9-13
- July 20-24
- July 27-31
During this time, some nighttime lane closures on each road will be required.
Pedestrians and motorists are advised to exercise caution while traveling through the work area. The community is also asked to exercise patience as the Town works to enhance safety and improve traffic flow.

The Beaufort County School District started roadway construction on School Road on June 1. The project area extends from Wilborn Road to Hilton Head Island High School's Seahawk Theatre. This work is part of planned improvements and is expected to be completed by the end of July.
During this time, School Road will be closed to through traffic within the construction zone. Motorists accessing the Island Recreation Center should use Gumtree Road. Destinations along Main Street should be accessed via Wilborn Road south of School Road. Traffic control measures will be in place, and drivers are encouraged to use caution when traveling in the area.

In honor of the Juneteenth holiday, the Town of Hilton Head Island administrative offices will be closed on Thursday, June 19. The offices will reopen for regular business hours at 8 a.m. on Friday, June 20.
The Beaufort County Convenience Center at 26 Summit Drive will also be closed on Thursday, June 19, and will return to its regular schedule on Friday, June 20. Town emergency services will remain fully operational.

Juneteenth, short for June 19th, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and honors the resilience and contributions of African Americans. It also preserves the rich history and traditions of our community. It was officially established as a federal holiday in 2021 and adopted by the Town of Hilton Head Island in 2022. Historic Mitchelville proudly hosts annual events in June, celebrating freedom, community, and cultural heritage.
