Residents along Mitchelville Road will soon benefit from a newly paved roadway. Through the Town's Dirt Road Paving Program, this road will be made safer for residents and emergency vehicles to use.
As part of its Dirt Road Paving Program, the Town of Hilton Head Island has obtained the necessary rights-of-way from property owners along Mitchelville Road. These rights-of-way, or legal permissions granted by property owners, allow the Town to use portions of their land for public infrastructure, such as roads. Property owners can donate these rights-of-way through this program, enabling the Town to construct and maintain public roads indefinitely.
With the rights-of-way now secured, the Town can proceed with designing road plans and obtaining the required permits to pave this section of the road from Fish Haul Road to the dead end. The paving work is expected to begin within the current fiscal year and is funded through the Town's Capital Improvements Program budget.
The Dirt Road Paving Program is part of the Town's 2023-2025 Strategic Action Plan. It aims to improve dirt roads in neighborhoods across the Island, contingent on property owner requests and permissions. The goal is to enhance road quality and ensure safer access for residents and emergency vehicles.
You can follow the progress of the Mitchelville Road paving project via our Capital Improvements Dashboard (select Dirt Road Paving: Mitchelville Road from the list of active projects). For more information, please contact Karla Vincent, Senior Project Engineer, at 843-341-4779 or KarlaV@hiltonheadislandsc.gov.

The Town of Hilton Head Island avoided significant damage from Hurricane Helene, which was downgraded to a tropical storm early Friday morning. Thanks to the majority of its electrical lines being situated underground, the island experienced minimal disruption in contrast to the occasional power outages in surrounding areas.
Between midnight and 9 a.m. on Friday, crews from Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue responded to approximately 40 storm-related incidents. The agency reported a total of 35 downed trees, two of which caused damage to buildings.
Following the storm, the Hilton Head Island community rallied together to assist with tree removals, debris cleanups, and resource drop-offs aimed to support areas that experienced severe damage. The Town learned a lot from this storm and plans to apply that knowledge as the hurricane season continues through to the end of November.

We had an outstanding turnout at our recent "Money Talks" seminar, a fantastic opportunity for small businesses to connect with finance experts and gain practical insights into their access to capital. Participants received valuable guidance on funding & resources, start-ups, and small business.
Cohosted by the Gullah Geechee Historic Neighborhoods Community Development Corporation and TD Bank, these workshops are specifically designed to provide business advice and strategic insights.
We encourage business owners to attend the remaining sessions, whether it’s all of them or just those that suit their specific needs. Best of all, these sessions are free to attend.
The next seminar, focusing on small business lines of credit vs term loans, will take place on Tuesday, October 8, at 5 p.m. at the Island Recreation Center, 20 Wilborn Road.

Last week, the Latinos Unidos of the Lowcountry Food Festival was in full swing at Lowcountry Celebration Park! The event included incredible food, live music, bouncy houses, shopping vendors, and more. The best part was that all proceeds benefit the Volunteers in Medicine Clinic of Hilton Head Island!
