Now Available: Streamed Concert Presentation from the Arts Center

 Earlier this year, the Lowcountry’s own Voices of El Shaddai gospel choir was recently bestowed the Jean Laney Harris Folk Heritage Award by the S.C. General Assembly.

As a thank you to the community for its support, the Arts Center is celebrating this magnificent gospel choir group and their cultural contributions to our area with a free streamed concert – filmed on the Arts Center stage -- now available for viewing via online registration.

Jeffrey Reeves, the Arts Center’s CEO/President said, “We are thrilled to be celebrating the music, tradition, and cultural significance of The Voices of El Shaddai with this concert! The Arts Center is extremely proud of the group’s well-deserved recognition, and knew early on that we wanted to honor them with this virtual concert presentation. The week of Thanksgiving seemed the perfect time to give this to our community.”

Mitchelville Holiday Lights

Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park confirms their annual holiday lights event for 2020. This year’s event will be a drive-through experience of holiday lights themed as “Season’s Greetings from Around the World”. 

Attendees will be required to stay in their vehicles and wear mask if they are travel in vehicles without windows.

Gallery of Gifts at the Art League of Hilton Head

For the first time ever this December, Art League gallery will be transformed into a holiday Gallery of Gifts, featuring one-of-a-kind decor and gift items handmade by Art League members.

Shoppers can add to their holiday ornament collection, pick up a pair of unique earrings or a stunning necklace for a special someone (or themselves), or browse a variety of small paintings and sculptures to add a special touch to their home for the holidays or year-round.

“The idea of turning our art gallery into a gift gallery is an exciting one for us here at Art League. Of course, all of the artworks we exhibit throughout the year are available for purchase, but we’ve never before sold gift items specifically with the holiday season in mind,” says Gallery manager Kristen McIntosh. “It gives our artists a chance to craft smaller pieces and our visitors the opportunity to own or gift a piece of art that’s priced more affordably.”

Discovery Lecture Series

The Great Race – 1565, France versus Spain or Spain versus France

The Coastal Discovery Museum will host Doug Nelson and Howard Heckrotte on December 9 for this program.  In 1565 both France and Spain set out for Florida to establish ownership not only of the Florida peninsula, but the whole of perceived North America. 

Both countries were driven by rampant greed and lust for new lands and also gold, silver, slaves, and anything else of perceived value.  This talk will cover the different routes taken by the protagonists, Jean Ribaut for France and the great Pedro Menendez De Aviles for Spain.  We have the start/arrive dates for each from correspondence which still exists.  So how do we put forward positions of ships at different dates in voyage?

The cost for the program is $7 in person and $5 for virtual viewing.  Reservations are required and may be made by calling 843-689-6767 ext. 223.

Henry Cho Brings His Comedy to the Arts Center

Comedian Henry Cho says, "I'm an Asian with a Southern accent ... that's funny right there." This Arts Center favorite is a refreshing comic who proves that you can be funny while keeping it clean.

His TV credits include appearances on NBC's The Tonight Show, CBS's The Late, Late Show, and NBC's Young Comedians Special. He served two years as host of NBC's Friday Night Videos, has had many guest roles on various network sitcoms and has been in several films. He can also be heard on Sirius/XM Radio and is a regular performer at the Grand Ole Opry.

From the stories of his southern childhood to bantering with the crowd, Henry Cho keeps the audience laughing all night long.

Sweetgrass Wreath Class at Coastal Discovery Museum

The Coastal Discovery Museum will offer Sweetgrass Basket Making classes this fall. 

Wreath making class will be held Saturdays, December 5 and 12 from 10:30 am until 12:30 pm   

Learn about the history of the Sweetgrass basket, one of the Lowcountry’s best known art forms, from a local Gullah basket maker.  Then, try your hand at starting a wreath of your own using locally found natural materials. 

The cost is $65 adult and reservations are required by calling 843-689-6767 ext 223.
