Fireworks Safety Tips from the Fire Marshal:
Always prioritize safety when using fireworks. Start by reading and following the instructions on the fireworks packaging carefully.
It is crucial to use fireworks outdoors in an open area, away from buildings, dry grass, and flammable materials. Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby in case of emergencies.
Never attempt to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks. Instead, douse them with water and dispose of them properly. Remember, safety glasses can provide an extra layer of protection for your eyes, so consider wearing them when lighting fireworks.
Keep a safe distance from fireworks and make sure everyone else does too. Spectators should maintain a distance of at least 30 feet from the fireworks launching area. Designate a responsible adult as the fireworks operator and ensure they are not under the influence of alcohol or any other substances that may impair judgment. Children should never be allowed to handle or ignite fireworks, even sparklers. Sparklers may seem harmless, but they can reach temperatures as high as 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, which can cause severe burns.

Hurricane Preparedness Tips from the Emergency Management Director
Hurricanes are powerful and destructive natural disasters that can cause widespread damage and loss of life. Being prepared for a hurricane is crucial to ensure the safety of yourself, your loved ones, and your property. Here are three important tips on hurricane preparedness:
Create an Emergency Plan: Developing an emergency plan is vital before hurricane season begins. Identify a safe location where you can take shelter, such as a designated room or a community shelter. Discuss evacuation routes and establish a communication plan with your family members or close friends. Additionally, gather essential supplies like non-perishable food, drinking water, batteries, flashlights, a first aid kit, important documents, and any necessary medications. Having these items readily available will help you respond quickly and effectively.
Secure Your Property: Take proactive measures to secure your property before a hurricane strikes. Trim any overhanging tree branches and remove loose debris or objects from your yard that could become projectiles in high winds. Reinforce windows and doors with storm shutters or plywood. Consider investing in a generator to ensure a backup power source. Familiarize yourself with how to shut off utilities in case of an emergency. It's also crucial to review your insurance coverage and understand the extent of your protection. Consider purchasing flood insurance, as standard homeowner's insurance policies usually don't cover flood damage.
Stay Informed and Be Ready to Act: Stay tuned to your trusted local news and weather sources, as they will provide valuable information on the hurricane's track, intensity, and potential impacts. Keep a battery-powered or hand-cranked radio for updates in case of power outages. Stay connected with loved ones through phone calls, text messages, or social media. Being aware of the situation and staying informed will enable you to make informed decisions and respond promptly to protect yourself and your family.
Remember, hurricane preparedness is a continuous effort that requires vigilance and proactive planning. By creating an emergency plan, securing your property, and staying informed, you increase your chances of staying safe during a hurricane and minimizing its impact on your life.
