Dorchester County Memorial Day Ceremony and Veterans Monument Unveiling
Dorchester County Council hosted a Memorial Day Ceremony and Veterans Monument Unveiling on Monday, May 29th at Davis-Bailey Park.
The ceremony included remarks by Councilwoman Harriet A. Holman (Lieutenant Colonel U.S. Army Ret.) with the keynote address given by Summerville resident Dr. Tom Riddick (Captain USMC Ret.).
The ceremony also included the Posting of Colors by the Honor Guard of the 628th Force Support Squadron of Joint Base Charleston and a Wreath Laying to honor those who have given their lives for their country and for those missing in action.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, County Council members, Dorchester County Veterans Affairs Director Johnny Brown, Dorchester County Administrator Jason Ward, and other representatives unveiled the newly installed Veterans Memorial located at Davis-Bailey Park.
Hurricane Preparedness Expo at Ashley River Park
In anticipation of the upcoming hurricane season, Dorchester County invites residents to the 10th annual Hurricane Preparedness Expo. This is an educational and interactive event designed to equip Dorchester County residents with essential knowledge and resources to stay safe during severe weather events. The Expo will be held on June 3, 2023, at the Ashley River Park.
The Hurricane Preparedness Expo aims to provide valuable information, tips, and resources to help residents of Dorchester County effectively prepare for hurricanes and other natural disasters. This is an excellent opportunity for both new and longtime residents to engage with local emergency management officials, learn about emergency supplies, and understand the steps necessary to protect their families and property.

Date: Sat. June 3, 2023 Time: 10:00am - 1:00pm Location: Ashley River Park, 200 Renken Road, Summerville If you do not have an Annual Pass, admission to the park is $2 per person (free for 3 years-old and under).
The Hurricane Preparedness Expo will feature a range of fun activities and offerings. These include interactive exhibits, food trucks, a bounce house, balloon art, face painting, a children's train, and emergency services demonstrations. Charleston Electric will also be raffling off a brand new 3600-watt Generac GP3600 portable generator.
Additionally, this year Dorchester County's Emergency Management Department and Coastal Coffee Roasters worked together to debut our new medium roast coffee: Storm Surge. This coffee will be available at the Expo in both ground and whole bean form. Our partner, Tradesman Brewing Company, will also be present with our unique Know Your Zone beer. Free coffee samples will be available to all participants, and there will be beer samples for those 21 years of age and older.
The Hurricane Preparedness Expo is open to all Dorchester County residents. Attendees are encouraged to bring their families and friends to participate in this unique opportunity to enhance their understanding of hurricane preparedness.

Looking for a new career? You're invited to our hiring fair on Wednesday, June 14 from 10:00am - 1:00pm at Dorchester County Water and Sewer located at 235 Deming Way in Summerville.
Representatives from our Human Resources Department, Water and Sewer Department, Stormwater Division, Detention Center, and Road Maintenance Division will be available to answer any questions you may have.

Take a Few Minutes to Help Us Update the Comprehensive Plan
The Dorchester County Comprehensive Plan was last updated in 2018 and is under its mandatory five-year review. This plan serves as the basis for County decision-making regarding our physical, social, economic, and cultural growth and development.
Our first step is to collect feedback from our residents through a survey. This survey is intended to gauge the alignment of the current plan with the needs and desires of the community. Please complete the survey and be on the lookout for additional opportunities to provide input on the Comprehensive Plan in the coming weeks.
SCDOT Marshall Murdaugh Maintenance Facility Naming Ceremony
This past month, the South Carolina Department of Transportation held a special Marshall Murdaugh Maintenance Facility Naming Ceremony to honor the late Mr. Marshall Murdaugh for his career of over 54 years with the South Carolina Department of Transportation.
Mr. Murdaugh also served on the Dorchester County Transportation Authority Board for over 20 years and was extremely active in the community. Many of his former co-workers, long-time friends, and community and state leaders gathered together with his family for the special program and unveiling.

Are you interested in becoming involved with local government? We have an opening on the Dorchester County Board of Assessment Appeals, and we'd love for you to apply!
The Board consists of seven members, one from each of the seven Council Districts, appointed by Council. Members hear appeals of property owners concerning the valuation, assessment, and taxation of property.

Dorchester County officials Install Equipment to Improve Communications During Emergencies
This past month, Dorchester County expanded our amateur radio network which improved emergency communications with the state, hospitals, and first responders. Our Dorchester Amateur Radio Team (D.A.R.T.) are trained volunteers who help during emergencies when other systems fail or are overloaded. Interested in volunteering? The Emergency Management Department will be hosting two upcoming Amateur Radio Team Technician Classes.

Dorchester County First Responders Recognized by the Rotary Club of Summerville
At the May 17 meeting of the Rotary Club of Summerville, First Responder Awards were presented to those serving our community. Award winners were nominated and chosen by their respective organizations and plaques and recognition were given at the meeting by the club.

Heir's Property and Property Tax Seminar
Dorchester County, the Center for Heirs' Property Preservation, and the Sand Hill Community Association invite you to a special presentation that will explain what is heirs’ property, how does owning heirs’ property affect you, and what steps you can take to preserve your property. VA Benefits and Disability Claims Workshop
Dorchester County Veterans Affairs is hosting a Veterans Benefits and Disability Claims Workshop on June 27 from 2pm - 4pm at County Council Chambers in Summerville (500 N. Main Street).
The agenda will include a disability benefits overview, dependency and indemnity compensation and pension eligibility, and a time for questions.
