Dorchester County to Celebrate 125 Years of Service
This year marks the 125th anniversary of Dorchester County's establishment. Residents are invited to celebrate this milestone on Saturday, December 10, 2022, from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm at the Ashley River Park (200 Renken Road, Summerville). Admission to Ashley River Park is $2 per person. You can also get FREE admission for one vehicle if you bring a new toy to donate for the Do More Christmas Toy Drive.
Scheduled events include meet-and-greets with SC Stingrays mascot, "Cool Ray" and Summerville High School mascot, "Tuffy," a performance from the Gregg Middle School Steel Drum Band, and kids’ activities. Free hot dogs, hamburgers, cookies, and birthday cake will be served to celebrate the County's 125th birthday!
Representatives from the Dorchester Heritage Center, Dorchester County Career and Technology Center, and the Rosenwald School will also be in attendance to provide information and answer any questions visitors may have.
Do More Christmas Toy Drive
The Community Resource Center of Summerville and Dorchester County have partnered to host the Do More Christmas Toy Drive. Over 200 collection boxes are placed at county buildings, county fire stations, libraries, and local businesses. Residents are asked to donate new, unwrapped toys.
Toys, hygiene items, and food will be distributed on December 23rd from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the future location of the Central Health and Human Services Complex at 1452 Boone Hill Road in Summerville (the former BI-LO building).

Tri-County Warming Centers December 1, 2022 through March 15, 2023
Individuals who reside outside, in cars, or in unheated houses need somewhere safe and warm to sleep during cold weather. Warming Centers are available to fill this need by providing a bed, meals, clothing, and other basic needs. Men, women, and children are welcome; no pets are accepted.
Centers only open when temperatures reach 35°F or below. The decision to open is made 48 hours in advance. Admission is from 7pm-9pm, and guests must leave the shelter each morning at 7am.

Holiday Movie Night at Ashley River Park
Join us for Holiday Movie Night at Ashley River Park (200 Renken Road, Summerville) on Friday, December 16th starting at 4:30pm with food trucks, concessions, coffee, and hot chocolate. We'll then be showing the movie The Grinch at 5:30pm!
Don't forget that it's $2 admission per person OR free admission for everyone in your car if you bring a new toy for the Do More Christmas Toy Drive.
Ashley River Park is also offering FREE admission ALL DAY for one vehicle on the following days if you bring a new, unwrapped toy to donate:
- Friday, December 10th, same day as Dorchester County's 125th Anniversary Celebration at Ashley River Park
- Friday, December 16th, same day as the Christmas Movie in the Park at Ashley River Park
- Saturday, December 17th
- Sunday, December 18th
Dorchester EMS Hosted Regional Conference with Author and Freedom House Paramedic
On Friday, November 11, Dorchester County EMS hosted the annual regional EMS Conference for all first responders. This year the keynote speakers were Kevin Hazzard, former paramedic and author of American Sirens: The Incredible Story of the Black Men Who Became America’s First Paramedics, and John Moon retired EMS Assistant Chief from Pittsburgh EMS and Freedom House Paramedic. Mr. Moon was also recently featured on NPR’s At Freedom House, these Black men saved lives.
Freedom House was the first true ambulance service ever established, and the model for all paramedic programs. It was an incredible honor for Dorchester County EMS and all first responder attendees to meet Mr. Hazzard and Mr. Moon.
Dorchester Library Offers Free Passes for Checkout
Did you know that Dorchester County Libraries offer free passes to the SC Aquarium, SC State Parks, the Children's Museum of the Low Country, and the Ashley River Park to check out?

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Fall Graduation
Congratulations to the fall 2022 Community Emergency Response Team graduates!
CERT volunteers are trained to assist their community in the event of a natural or man-made disasters when emergency services may not be immediately available. This program is about readiness, people helping people, and doing the greatest good for the community.
Residents who complete the CERT training will be more capable and ready to respond to emergency and disaster situations. For more information and/or to register for the class, please contact David Amann with the Emergency Management Department at (843) 832-0341.
County Council Presents Employee of the Quarter Award
On November 21, County Council recognized Ms. Rosio Dannible as the Employee of the Quarter. Ms. Dannible is a Building Services Permit Clerk and has worked for the county for the last six years. She has a reputation for being a team player and providing outstanding customer service to the public. Ms. Dannible is valued as an employee and a co-worker, and Dorchester County is blessed to have her on our team!

Veterans Day Celebration
Thank you to those who attended the county's annual Veterans Day Celebration at Davis-Bailey Park on Saturday, November 12. The event kicked off with a parade and then a ceremony honoring and recognizing veterans in attendance. Mr. Henry L. Taylor, Brigadier General, United States Air Force (Retired), was the keynote speaker. Participants then enjoyed live music, lunch, and kids' activities. A beautiful display of fireworks ended the day.
