Dorchester County Approved to Submit $1 Million Grant Application for Future Urgent Care Facility in St. George
On May 2, 2022, the Dorchester County Council approved the filing of a grant application to the USDA for $1 million to help fund the future urgent care facility which will serve residents in the St. George and surrounding areas.
In March of 2019, County Council adopted the Dorchester County Strategic Plan which prioritized the expansion of public health services to the rural part of the county. County staff identified an 8,200 square foot building on the corner of Sears Street and NW Railroad Avenue that was constructed in 2001 and used as the former female detention center. The county contracted with SMHa, Inc. who conducted a feasibility study that confirmed the conversion of the space into an urgent care facility and provided the county a schematic floor plan and estimated budget.

Services to be Provided for the Displaced and Unsheltered Population
The Tri-County Sheriff's Offices have come together with Lowcountry community partners and agencies to branch out to those experiencing homelessness or living with low-income. The goal of Extending Branches events is to provide a low-barrier opportunity for our neighbors to connect with life-giving assistance and resources. The next event is on Saturday, June 11, 2022, from 1-5pm (1-3pm for unsheltered population; 3-5pm for others) at Seacoast Church (301 E. 5th St., Summerville). Click for more information.
Dorchester County is also collecting the following donations for our unsheltered population: insect repellant, clothing (new socks only), batteries (AA, AAA, C and D), heavy duty black trash bags, canned food, and bottled water. You may bring these donations to the Human Services Building (500 N. Main Street, Summerville) and place them in a box in the Community Services wing.
Additionally, the Community Services Division partners with the Sherriff’s’ Office to visit the many neighborhoods and home owner associations in the County to discuss crime and appearance issues with residents. The focus of this program addresses public safety, livability, and quality of life issues in Dorchester County. Not all the neighborhoods or subdivisions are represented, and we are looking to establish at least one meeting per quarter in Stratton Capers, Greenhurst, Dorchester Manor, Fair Lawn, and Tranquille Acres. If you are interested in participating in please call 843-832-0117.
