Happy Holidays from the SCORE Team!

scorechristmas2

'Twas the night before Christmas,

And on the mud flat,

Not a creature was stirring,

Not even a spat.

The clams were nestled

All snug in their beds

While visions of plankton

Danced in their heads....

We had a VERY productive year building oyster reefs and planting marsh grass, and we could not have done it without YOU! Thank you so much for your commitment to rebuilding South Carolina's precious marsh habitat with us. Check out the recap of what you helped us accomplish this year.

3,079 Community Members spent 5,043 hours accomplishing:

  • 38 oyster reef builds made up of
    • 12,436 oyster shell bags & 251 manufactured wire reefs enhancing South Carolina's estuaries
  • 53,623 Spartina plants planted back in the marsh preventing shoreline erosion
  • 3,070 linear feet of new oyster reef providing habitat for over 120 different species
  • 153,835 pounds of recycled oyster shell (2,797 bushels) through volunteers from restaurants in Greenville, Charleston, Beaufort, and Bluffton
  • 1,985 pounds of trash removed from recycled oyster shell! That's nearly 1 TON of trash not going in our waterways! Hopefully next year we will find much less trash in our recycled shell
  • Thank you to Charleston Waterkeeper, Coastal Conservation League, The Sustainability Institute, Casual Crabbing with Tia, The Outside Foundation, Coastal Conservation Association and all of our other amazing partners!

For a total of 202 SCORE events! THANK YOU to everyone who helped make 2022 a success!

Get on the Nice List...Recycle your Shell this Holiday Season!

If you are Shell-abrating this holiday season with an oyster roast, be sure to take your shells to the nearest drop off bin. These shells will help build next year's reefs!

PSA: Don't be a Grinch! Taking oyster shell from DNR property is illegal and involves a hefty fine... this includes buckets, bins, drop off sites, trailers, etc.
