Safely Return Unused Medicine

Medicine Return

Drug abuse. Accidental poisonings.  Medicines in our waters and soils. These are serious issues that can result from keeping expired or unwanted medicines in our homes or improperly disposing them in the garbage, toilet or drain.  How can we prevent such events from happening?

King County has a new Secure Medicine Return program with two convenient kiosk locations in Renton.  There is no fee to dispose of your expired or unwanted medicines at these locations:

Renton Police Department at City Hall
  1055 S Grady Way

Group Health Renton Medical Center
   275 Bronson Way N

Accepted items:  Prescription and non-prescription medicines in any dosage form, except those listed below, in their original container or in a sealed bag.

Not accepted items: Herbal remedies, vitamins, supplements, cosmetics, other personal care products, compressed cylinders, aerosols, inhalers, medical devices, pet pesticide products, sharps, illicit drugs, iodine-containing medications.

Don't forget to remove all personal and identifying information from your medication labels and/or its packaging before disposing them in the kiosk.

For FAQ's and to search for other kiosk locations in King County visit the MED Project.  Additional information on safe disposal of medications can be found on FDA's "How to Dispose of Unused Medicines" webpage.
