City Provides Extended Hours at Rec Centers for Students and Families on PPS Days Off
Pittsburgh, PA – As part of Mayor Corey O’Connor’s commitment to supporting children, youth, and families, City of Pittsburgh recreation centers will extend their hours on days when Pittsburgh Public Schools are closed or have early dismissal. The extended hours will help bridge the gap in care coverage free of charge for families.
“We want every family to choose Pittsburgh first and our recreation centers provide incredible services and programming for our youth,” said Mayor O’Connor. “It’s important that our local families have free options for where kids can go on their days off school to play, discover and explore. Thank you to our CitiParks Office of Youth and Families and our recreation centers for extending this service.”
The extended hours are free of charge for Pittsburgh students and families. The centers will open at 8:00 AM on full day closures and 11:30 AM on early dismissal days. Registration is required and opens on Tuesday, September 15, 2026. Parents or guardians can register at the recreation center where their child or children will attend and they may select multiple eligible dates during this school year, including:
Early Dismissal Days – Recreation centers open at 11:30 AM
School Closure Days – Recreation centers open at 8:00 AM
- October 12 (High Schools & 6-12 schools)
- October 16 (Elementary, Middle & K-8 schools)
- November 3 (Election Day)*
*Some recreation centers will not offer care on election days as they serve as polling locations. Centers that will be open on these days are Ammon, Ormsby, Jefferson and Magee.
Snacks will be provided in the afternoon on early dismissal days while lunch and snacks will be provided on full days.
Special programming and partner visits on these days will be posted on CitiParks’ social media. Follow them on Facebook, Instagram and X.
