City of Pittsburgh Awarded More Than $1.5 Million to Improve Intersection Safety in Larimer, Lawrenceville, and South Side
Pittsburgh, PA – The City of Pittsburgh's Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) has been awarded $1,533,315 through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's (PennDOT) Green Light-Go Program to replace outdated traffic signals at three intersections in the South Side Flats, Lawrenceville, and Larimer.
The grant will fund signal replacements at:
• Bingham Street and 10th Street (South Side Flats)
• Butler Street and Main Street (Lawrenceville)
• East Liberty Boulevard and Larimer Avenue (Larimer)
The project will modernize aging traffic signal infrastructure with upgraded LED traffic signal heads, accessible pedestrian signals, pedestrian countdown timers, and other safety improvements designed to improve visibility, accessibility, and traffic operations. Select locations will also receive concrete bumpouts to shorten pedestrian crossings and help slow turning vehicles. Design for all three projects is expected to begin in fall 2026, with construction anticipated to begin in spring 2027.
The three projects have an estimated total cost of approximately $1.9 million. The Green Light-Go Program provides $1.53 million in funding, with the City contributing the required 20 percent local match, or approximately $383,000.

The Green Light-Go Program is a competitive PennDOT grant program that helps municipalities modernize existing traffic signals to improve safety, reduce congestion, and enhance traffic flow across Pennsylvania.
