DOMI Awarded 2025 Geotechnical Project of the Year from the Engineers’ Society of Western Pennsylvania
Pittsburgh, PA – Last week, representatives from the City of Pittsburgh Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) joined the Engineers’ Society of Western Pennsylvania (ESWP) to receive the Geotechnical Project of the Year Award for the Mount Washington Landslide Mitigation Project. The project consisted of landslide remediation at three major sites on the slopes of Mount Washington.
The projects, located at Greenleaf Street, Reese Street and William Street, have brought long-term stability to some of Pittsburgh’s most landslide-prone terrain—protecting roads, trails, and nearby homes, reinforcing the City’s commitment to building resilient neighborhoods.
“Congratulations to Acting Director Jeff Skalican and the DOMI team for this recognition of their hard work for the Mount Washington Landslide Mitigation Project,” said Mayor Corey O’Connor. “This was a complicated project, and our engineers, planners, project managers and partners are consistently delivering high-quality projects for our city.”

"Restoring stability to the slopes of Mount Washington was a team effort and could not have been done without collaboration from all levels of the public sector."
The projects were funded by a $13.3 million Pre-Disaster Mitigation Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), administered by Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA), with a 25% local match provided by the City of Pittsburgh.

The Mount Washington projects are part of a broader City effort to address hillside instability and climate-related vulnerabilities through proactive, data-driven infrastructure planning. Studies from the National Institute of Building Sciences show that every $1 invested in mitigation yields approximately $6 in future cost savings—making projects like these essential to Pittsburgh’s long-term resilience strategy.
The ESWP award comes after DOMI’s Corbin Kramer won the Young Government Engineer of the Year award for 2025 from the American Society of Civil Engineers, Pittsburgh Chapter.
