Mayor Ed Gainey's Statement on Planned ‘No King’ Protests Ahead of President Trump’s Military Parade

"At a time when the echoes of division are loud, our elected leaders should be focused on fostering unity rather than staging displays that may deepen divides both here in America and abroad.  I am deeply concerned about President Trump’s decision to hold a military parade that appears to serve more as a show of force than a genuine celebration of our nation’s service members.  Using military equipment and personnel in this way is contrary to the values we hold dear as a country.  

True strength lies in collaboration and respect, not in demonstrations of intimidation and force. 

In that vein, I reaffirm that the freedom to freely express our unique views is a core value that defines our democracy.  The First Amendment guarantees the freedom of speech, the freedom of assembly, and the right to protest.  These rights are not only protected—they are essential to the continued health and strength of our democracy.   

I recognize that many in our city feel passionate about the issues facing our country, and I respect and support your right to make your voices heard.  Peaceful protest is a powerful tool for change, and throughout our nation’s history it has led to some of our greatest progress.  I encourage all those attending planned protests to engage peacefully and responsibly.   

Our Department of Public Safety is committed to protecting every resident, and they will continue working to ensure everyone remains safe.  Let us raise our voices. Let Pittsburgh be a shining example of a city where civic engagement is not just protected but also respected." ~Mayor Ed Gainey
