Mayor Ed Gainey Statement on the Federal Budget Proposed by President Trump

"After an initial review of President Trump’s budget proposal released on Friday, May 2, it is clear these cuts go even further than those proposed by Elon Musk and are a direct attack on working families here in Pittsburgh, the communities across our region, and Western PA’s innovation economy. It would enrich the billionaires, CEOs of giant corporations, and oligarchs bankrolling the MAGA movement at the expense of everyone else.  

Trump’s budget would mean federal investments in affordable housing and community development in neighborhoods from the Hill District to Homewood are torn away. It would mean families with kids losing support to make their homes lead safe.  It would mean fewer resources for community health programs, opioid response, and a compromised public health system ill equipped to find cures to diseases or protect us from the next pandemic. It would mean resources ripped from our research institutions that have made Pittsburgh a hub for technology. And it would mean our senior and low-income neighbors would lose the assistance they rely on to keep their homes warm in the winter. At a time when the cost of everything continues to skyrocket, Americans deserve a budget that addresses the most common challenges we face, not one that would surrender American prominence and the promise of shared prosperity.  

Here in Pittsburgh, we remain focused on how we can work together to lift up every person. We believe in taking care of our neighbors.  For the sake of these shared values and the health of Pittsburgh, our region, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and our entire country, I will take every possible action to advocate against these cuts and leverage every tool at my administration’s disposal to protect the people of Pittsburgh against the harm of Trump’s cruel attacks."
