CITY OF PITTSBURGH BRIDGE UPDATES
Updates on Ongoing Infrastructure Projects
Pittsburgh, PA – The City of Pittsburgh’s Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI), through its Project Delivery and Design Bureau, has issued the following updates on ongoing City-owned bridge projects.
PANTHER HOLLOW BRIDGE
The Panther Hollow Bridge, located in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood, has been closed since October 2024. The closure followed a recommendation by the City’s inspection consultant after preliminary findings indicated safety concerns.
Since then, the bridge has undergone a detailed hands-on inspection and load rating analysis. Due to the bridge’s condition and complexity, specialized rope-access certified climbers were brought in to complete a full inspection and 3D structural analysis of the truss system.
DOMI is currently working with engineering consultants on repair designs, with final plans expected by June 2025. Construction is anticipated to begin shortly thereafter. Once complete, the bridge will reopen to all traffic, restoring a key connection between Oakland and the recreational amenities of Schenley Park and surrounding East End neighborhoods.
CHARLES ANDERSON MEMORIAL BRIDGE
Rehabilitation work on the Charles Anderson Memorial Bridge began in Fall 2024 and has reached several important milestones:
Coordination completed with multiple railroads for installation of work platforms and under-bridge containment.
Stage 3 of 27 in the repair process is complete, allowing for multiple work crews to progress concurrently on steel repairs, painting, and asbestos abatement.
Demolition of the outdated Panther Hollow Overpass has been completed; reconstruction is planned for the coming months.
The bridge is expected to reopen to all traffic by Fall 2026, with full project completion targeted for Spring 2027.
DAVIS AVENUE PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE
Reconstruction of the Davis Avenue Pedestrian Bridge in Brighton Heights is nearing completion. The final span was lifted into place early last week.
Although originally scheduled for completion in 2024, supply chain issues delayed delivery of the bridge truss to Spring 2025. Crews are currently installing the concrete bridge deck, paving the connecting trail, and completing landscaping. The bridge is on track to open by Memorial Day 2025.
WILKESBORO AVENUE PEDESTRAIN BRIDGE
The long-closed Wilkesboro Avenue Pedestrian Bridge, also located in Brighton Heights, has been scheduled for demolition. The bridge has been closed since 2007 due to safety concerns and will remain closed until it is safely removed.
“I made a pledge to the people of Pittsburgh that we will always put safety first,” said Mayor Ed Gainey. “The Wilkesboro Avenue pedestrian bridge has been closed for nearly two decades due to serious safety concerns, and now it's time to take the next step. By moving forward with demolition, we’re eliminating a known hazard and making room for future investment that truly serves this community.”
Out of an abundance of caution, residents are reminded to stay off and away from the closed bridge.
