Pittsburgh, PA – Councilman Lavelle has introduced legislation in Council which expands the City's Paid Sick Leave requirements by increasing the total amount of paid sick leave hours employees can accumulate. These measures will provide much needed protections to our workers, who are often faced with the difficult decision of either taking an unpaid sick day or going to work while ill, thereby endangering others in the workplace to illness.
In summary, the amendment lowers the rate at which employees can accumulate paid sick leave hours, and increases the maximum total amount of paid sick leave hours that employees can accumulate.
For employees of employers with 15 or more employees: -1 hour of paid sick time is accrued for every 30 hours worked, as opposed to the current 35 hour requirement -Employees are permitted to accrue a max total of 72 hours of paid sick time, as opposed to the current 40 hour limit
For employees of employers with fewer than 15 employees: -1 hour of paid sick time is accrued for every 30 hours worked, as opposed to the current 35 hour requirement -Employees are permitted to accrue a max total of 48 hours of paid sick time, as opposed tot he current 24 hour limit
Paid sick leave is a question of equity and justice for our valued workers, as well as a public health concern. When an employee cannot afford to take an unpaid sick day and goes into work while ill, they are endangering their own health and that of others around them. These amendments provide an increased level of protection to the City's workforce and to our public health.
