Pittsburgh, PA – While attending Governor Josh Shapiro’s annual budget address in the State Capitol today, Mayor Ed Gainey praised the Governor’s proposal of new state funding that will significantly increase the Commonwealth’s ability to invest in critical infrastructure, safety, and community programs. This funding will enhance the quality of life for residents while addressing key areas of concern in our city.
“We are grateful for this opportunity to strengthen Pittsburgh’s infrastructure, enhance public safety, and support community programs that make a difference in people’s lives,” Mayor Ed Gainey said. “Governor Shapiro’s proposed investments will ensure that our city continues to grow and evolve as a place where everyone can feel safe, secure, and proud to call home.”
If approved by the General Assembly, the additional funding will allow the City to make substantial progress in improving our roadways, enhancing the safety of our bridges, and updating vital community spaces such as parks and playgrounds. These updates are essential for ensuring that Pittsburgh remains a vibrant and safe place for all residents to live, work, and play.
Governor Josh Shapiro's proposed budget would also provide crucial support to historically disadvantaged businesses and local government emergency housing initiatives. This funding would help ensure that Pittsburgh's small and minority-owned businesses have the resources they need to grow and thrive while supporting efforts to address homelessness through emergency housing resources. These initiatives have the potential to create pathways for economic growth and stability for communities that have historically faced barriers to opportunity.
In addition to infrastructure improvements, the funding would support violence intervention and prevention programs that are vital to the well-being of our communities. Through collaboration with local school districts, libraries, and non-profits, these programs would provide crucial services to reduce violence and ensure safer environments for our youth and families.
The proposed funding for affordable housing will enhance the City's ability to provide more accessible housing options for residents in need. This investment will ensure that Pittsburgh remains an inclusive city, where everyone has the opportunity to secure a stable home.
The Governor's proposed budget would also provide additional funding for Pittsburgh to host the NFL Draft. This funding will be instrumental in showcasing Pittsburgh as a vibrant, world-class city and will provide the resources needed for Downtown development, enhancing the city's visibility and long-term economic growth. The vision is to highlight Pittsburgh as "Home" and to create lasting benefits for the community through this prestigious event.
This state funding would also provide the city with a unique opportunity to secure additional resources to revitalize our downtown area. Through the re-imagining of our downtown, we aim to create a space that benefits all residents and visitors, with an emphasis on making it a thriving, inclusive, and welcoming place for all.
The budget proposal also includes additional funding for police training, ensuring that officers are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to serve and protect the community effectively. This training is necessary to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, safety, and community engagement.
Lastly, the Governor’s proposal would expand the resources available for the City of Pittsburgh to continue to support the Western Pennsylvania Urban Search and Rescue Task Force, providing the Task Force with enhanced equipment and training, ensuring that they are better equipped to respond to emergencies and disasters, safeguarding the residents of Pittsburgh and the surrounding region.
