THE CITY OF PITTSBURGH NOW HAS ITS FIRST ACCESSIBLE TENNIS COURT
A re-fitted accessible tennis court is located in Highland Park
Pittsburgh, PA – Residents who live Highland Park will notice a completely re-designed high-visibility tennis court. This tennis court is part of Mayor Ed Gainey’s commitment to making Pittsburgh an accessible city and finding ways to make our constituent services accessible to all Pittsburghers.
The refitted tennis court is the first of its kind to be installed in a City of Pittsburgh facility. It will benefit those with vision impairments who may require higher contrast lining in order to play tennis.
“Recreation is sometimes an area that’s not considered when thinking of ensuring inclusive spaces in cities. When I sought out to increase accessibility across all city services, I knew we had to double-down on our efforts to make this City a place where everyone has the accommodations and tools they need to thrive,” said Mayor Ed Gainey.
“The City of Pittsburgh is proud to uplift accessibility in recreational activities and this is just one example of ensuring that for members of our disability community. I would like to thank the Department of Public Works facilities team for their hard work,” said City of Pittsburgh ADA Coordinator Michelle Walker.
The Department of Public Works is looking to expand accessible recreation options for city residents in the future. This court is reservable for programming. Those interested in reserving the space should reach out to CitiParks via email at citiparkstennis@pittsburghpa.gov or call 412-255-2349.
