Neighborhood Traffic Calming Measures
North Charles Avenue Will Receive Second Phase Traffic Calming Measures
Pittsburgh, PA – Residents in the Perry South neighborhood should be aware that phase two traffic calming measures will be taking place on North Charles Street. Traffic calming construction is tentatively set to begin on Thursday, September 26th (weather permitting). This project is aimed at increasing pedestrian safety throughout the corridor and the adjacent Fowler Park.
The traffic calming project updates include two (2) raised crosswalks and one (1) speed table. The raised crosswalks will be placed at North Charles Street & Norwood Avenue which is a transit stop along with North Charles Street & Shelton Avenue that’s a park entrance and transit stop. The speed table will be placed on N. Charles St. in between Shelton Ave. and Canter Way. In addition, there will be pedestrian crossing improvements at the intersection of N. Charles Street, Linwood Avenue, & Kimberlin Street.
"As Mayor, one of my top priorities is ensuring the safety of our residents, especially our children. Whether it’s addressing gun violence or traffic violence, we must do everything in our power to protect Pittsburghers. That’s why I’m proud to announce the second phase of traffic calming measures on N. Charles Street. All part of taking another step to make our streets safer for everyone, especially around our parks and schools," said Mayor Ed Gainey.
This project was selected after a 2022 traffic study showed that 82% of motorists exceeded the posted speed limit of 25 miles per hour. The maximum speed recorded on the roadway discovered some motorists traveled at tripled the posted speed limit, driving at 78 miles per hour.
Roadway work will tentatively begin with the speed table/raised crosswalk construction on Thursday, September 26th and is expected to last two (2) days. During which, flaggers will allow alternating traffic through the work area. Crews will install signage ahead of time and follow-up with roadway markings after roadway construction.
