Record-Setting 52 Neighborhood Teams To Pick up Litter as Part of Pittsburgh’s 8th Annual Garbage Olympics
Pittsburgh, PA – Pittsburgh residents in fifty-two (52) neighborhood teams will compete in the City’s 8th Annual Garbage Olympics on Saturday, September 20th. Teams will take to city streets to pick up litter from 10am through 2pm.
The Department of Public Works (DPW) along with the Clean Pittsburgh Commission will provide bags, gloves, and "nifty nabber" litter grabbers for the teams. DPW crews will again collect the trash from designated locations in each neighborhood, and the City’s hard-to-recycle vendor, Pennsylvania Resources Council, will gather and recycle the televisions found during clean-ups. The Garbage Olympics began in 2017 with five teams competing for an Oscar award for the most trash collected and has grown exponentially.
"Volunteer efforts are a great way to help keep our city as litter-free as possible. And we’re thankful for the volunteers taking the time to participate in keeping the city clean,” said Department of Public Works Deputy Director Bill Crean.
Winners will be announced by City Councilperson Bob Charland at a 1pm closing ceremony after the clean-ups at Velum Fermentation in South Side Flats. The ceremony will feature awards for the most trash collected, a display of found items with Allegheny CleanWays and litter-inspired art by local trash enthusiast Carye Bye, as well as a cookie table.
