Homewood Receives Vision Zero Traffic Safety Upgrade
Changes to Bennett Street Begin Wednesday
Pittsburgh, PA – Residents travelling along Bennett Street in Pittsburgh’s Homewood neighborhood should be prepared for upcoming traffic changes. The Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) will begin a Traffic Safety Corridor implementation on Bennett Street starting, Wednesday, July 10th.
The Traffic Safety Corridor project includes updated signal timing coordination, shorter traffic signal cycle lengths, Pedestrian Recall for side streets, Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPIs), and 'No Turn on Red' signs. These low-cost, high-yield safety implements aim to lower vehicle speeds, deter unsafe driver maneuvers and increase pedestrian safety.
“The innovative minds in the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure are doing all they can to improve our neighborhood streets. Their traffic safety measures enhance the well-being of Pittsburgh residents and improve roadway safety without the need for extensive construction,” said Mayor Ed Gainey.
This Traffic Safety project was selected after Bennett St. was identified as a corridor in the High Injury Network (HIN), which identifies roadways within the City of Pittsburgh that pose a high threat to traffic safety.
Roadway work associated with Traffic Safety Projects like these are relatively low impact. Motorists, pedestrians and cyclists can expect a mild delay and single lane closures in either direction while signage installation occurs.
The Traffic Safety Corridor implementation is expected to last less than one day, weather permitting.
