Mount Washington Pedestrian Safety Measures
Raised Crosswalk Constructed on Virginia Avenue
Pittsburgh, PA – Pedestrians in the tourist-friendly Mt. Washington Neighborhood will see a major upgrade to their commute this week. The Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) will begin installing a raised crosswalk across Virginia Avenue.
A raised sidewalk will be installed in front of the Mt. Washington Senior Center located at 122 Virginia Ave. In addition to the raised crosswalks, DOMI will be installing “No Parking” bump-outs to improve sight lines for pedestrians utilizing the crosswalk.
“I am thankful for our innovators at the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure. They are always looking out for our vulnerable populations when it comes to traffic safety. Without their diligence and continued efforts, Pittsburgh couldn’t become the safest city in America,” said Mayor Ed Gainey.
This Traffic Safety project was designed following the results of a traffic study that showed while speeding was not abundant in the corridor, yield compliance for pedestrians was quite low among motorists. The raised crosswalk is expected to increase motorist yield compliance, reduce motorist speed, and increase overall pedestrian safety.
Roadway work is expected to begin Wednesday June 26th (weather permitting) and should last a maximum of one day. During the construction, one lane of traffic will be closed with flaggers stationed at each end in order to allow alternating traffic
