Mayor Ed Gainey Announces 2024
“City in the Streets” Locations
Pittsburgh, PA – Today, Mayor Ed Gainey announced this year’s host neighborhoods for the 2024 “City in the Streets” initiative, led by the Office of Neighborhood Services. Last year, over 1,600 residents attended the events, resulting in over 40 service requests, and several capital improvements being fulfilled.
“Last year we heard directly from our residents how much they value face-to-face engagement with city leaders in their neighborhoods,” said Mayor Ed Gainey. “City in the Streets is about rebuilding trust between communities and their local government, and our follow through on items raised last year is a promise filled to those residents.”
The administration considers a variety of factors when determining locations for the City in the Streets initiative such as designation by Allegheny County as a High or Extreme Needs Community and volume of 311 reports. The initiative was birthed out of Mayor Ed Gainey’s Plan for Peace, prioritizing areas that experience a higher rate of crime as well. With high and extreme-need communities being less likely to utilize systems like 311, in-person engagements like this are critical.
“We know that high and extreme need neighborhoods are less likely to use systems like 311 because of historical disinvestment in their communities, said Rebekkah Ranallo, Senior Manager of Neighborhood Services. “City in the Streets helps our departments get critical data highlighting neighborhood needs, to ensure we’re delivering services equitably to all residents in need.”
In 2023, the city was able to act on many service requests and capital improvements discussed at the City in the Streets events. This includes traffic safety and sidewalk reconstruction projects in Marshall-Shadeland and Garfield, steps and retaining wall repair projects in Oakland and Arlington, and increased code enforcement in Sheraden.
